In fact, this is the first that I've heard of a wii slim.

That's it?Well it's not exactly slim just smaller since all they removed on this 1 is the Gamecube controller ports as well as the Memory card ports!! lol

On August 17, 2011, Nintendo announced the release of a revised Wii model, known as the "Wii Family Edition", which, while being the same dimensions as the existing model, is designed to sit horizontally and is not compatibile with Nintendo GameCube games or accessories.

As far as I know this has only been announced in European territories. I've yet to see or hear any announcements or packaging changes here in the states.
Edit: from what I've just read, it seems there was supposedly a new "family bundle" version released in the states as of October 23rd 2011...it's said to include New Super Mario Bros Wii and the Soundtrack to Super Mario Galaxy.
But I just checked Walmart's website and they have a "Family Fun Bundle" that claims the following:
Disc Channel - The Disc Channel is backwards compatible with Nintendo GameCube, so you can play all your new Wii discs, along with all your classic Nintendo GameCube discs too.
It seems kinda confusing to me.
