I got a question about the new Wii the 'Wii Slim'. Does this Wii have any software/hardware restrictions for softmodding the console? Or is softmodding just as easy as with the old Wii (the one with gc hardware).

The only difference is the lack of GameCube ports, that being 4 controller ports and 2 memory card slots.

As far as I know, the rest is exactly the same, but don't take my opinion for granted, I may be wrong.

I've heard any Wii game will work smoothly, homebrew as well. But no GC compatibility. Unsure if it has physically the SD card slot, but it should.

But these haven't been released yet, so how could you have?

In fact, this is the first that I've heard of a wii slim.

Yes they have, quite a while ago.

According to my prefered i-net store it was released 2011-10-26

Edit: It is also more expensive than the original. Dont we all dream about paying more for less? :)

All the images that I am finding online just show a normal looking wii.... nothing slim about it. So am I not finding the right images?

I think they are just calling the redesign a slim but it is not really slim it's still the same size

Well, now I've got to learn how to take apart another wii... but I probably wont see too many of them come in for repairs.

Well it's not exactly slim just smaller since all they removed on this 1 is the Gamecube controller ports as well as the Memory card ports!! lol

    From Wikipedia:

On August 17, 2011, Nintendo announced the release of a revised Wii model, known as the "Wii Family Edition", which, while being the same dimensions as the existing model, is designed to sit horizontally and is not compatibile with Nintendo GameCube games or accessories.

As far as I know this has only been announced in European territories. I've yet to see or hear any announcements or packaging changes here in the states.

Edit: from what I've just read, it seems there was supposedly a new "family bundle" version released in the states as of October 23rd 2011...it's said to include New Super Mario Bros Wii and the Soundtrack to Super Mario Galaxy.

But I just checked Walmart's website and they have a "Family Fun Bundle" that claims the following:
Disc Channel - The Disc Channel is backwards compatible with Nintendo GameCube, so you can play all your new Wii discs, along with all your classic Nintendo GameCube discs too.

It seems kinda confusing to me.

The new wii is labelled "Family Edition", not bundle.

The new one is the one with New Super Mario Bros Wii bundled in right? My local best buy had tons of them on the floor the other day. They're definitely out

It IS released here in the states.

Target (where I work) carries them, $150 USD - Black, with NSMB and SMG Soundtrack. Annoyingly, this has also raised the price of the Old Wii bundles, Black or White with MarioKart Wii and the Wheel to $150 up from $138. ffs. I already have one, but still. We've been carrying them for a bit over a week.

I was the first to stock them at my store XD

(and see my profile pic? That's me in my Target shirt goodness. ffs... how many work outfits I own now...)

Well either way I'm glad I bought mine over a year ago on craigslist brand new for $130. I honestly don't know why anyone would buy the "Family Edition" unless they just don't know any better. I'd rather my Wii be able to play Gamecube games and have the ability to use Gamecube remotes for Wii games.

It really baffles me as to why Nintendo thinks it's okay to cut back on the hardware and still charge the same, if not more than what the old one was.

What I've wondered about is that the system menu has it built in to show gamecube memory management did they remove the option on the newer wii or is it still there just not functional...I assume they haven't changed the software or else newer games would have an update

I'd love to play around with one of these 'newer' models and try to put BC and MIOS on them to see if it will still recognize a GC game. I almost bet that it will.
