tl;dr: I can't choose between getting my MacBook repaired, or just buying a new one. I need a cheap and light one for heavy webdev. Occasionally C# dev. No CPU-heavy C# programs, just RAM-heavy ones.
CPU tips are also welcome, because I don't know if I really need the latest i7 or not (most likely not).
---
I had a 2011 13" MacBook Pro which I found near the trash, but once I accidently fried the board by shorting the battery's ~18.5V to the 3V data line, frying some things in the process which caused it to no longer function.
I already got an another laptop since that incident, but the problem is is that it's so heavy that I can't lift it for the time I travel between two locations without collapsing mid-travel due to exhaustion.
Now, there are two reasons for me asking others about this:
The first one is that my demand is higher than my paycheck. Though it's ironic, because the high demant comes due to me not being able to do my job properly on my Celeron laptop (try doing webdev while Firefox runs at 1FPSand submitting a form takes 20seconds).
But most importantly, second, I'm an utter noob when it comes to hardware, especially CPUs. Because my MacBook had an i7, which ran great, and the laptop allocated to me at my workplace has a much newer gen i3 which runs like shit, I'm very biased towards an i7, and think that everything else is shit.
I also can't weigh my usage cases to be able to choose the CPU best for my workload. For some reason I always try to get the best single-core performance CPU, despite Firefox clearly using more than 6 processes.
So all in all, if I would've done what I wanted to do, I probably would've wasted a lot of money for nothing.
To summarize: I need a laptop which is less than 500€/500$, has a good CPU for very heavy webdev, and is small, light enough for me to carry, and won't break into pieces when the water bottle touches it in my bag. Cost is a priority. CPU is second, because I don't want to waste money for bad performance. Physical parameters come last, because there might be a powerful and lightweight, BUT large laptop, in which case I'll try to do something to work around that. 17" seems to be the top limit my bag can hold.
Tips are also welcome for choosing a CPU, in which case I can just filter it in my favorite laptop buying places.
