Supposedly you can prevent this happening by powering the Wii U on atleast once or twice a year, but I was wondering, does it really have to be turned on or would stand by mode all year long be good enough? Also, how much does it differ between the basic (white) edition and premium (black) models?

The white wiius are a bit safer because these don't have hynix chips, which are the culprits in the majority of corruption cases.

elaborate please
There is no way to prevent failure, it's potentially going to degrade whether you use the console or not.

I have black Wii U with a Hynix chip so I already took precautions with ISFShax and have a redNAND ready to go in case it fails.
