Hardware PSP won't play video

I recently bought a pre-owned PSP 1003, but there is no way I can get it to play AVI or MP4 movies uploaded to the memory stick. When I try, I get 'Corrupt Data' although they play fine on the PC when I remove the stick and play them from the USB adapter. MP3 music plays fine though.
What may be the problem with playing movies?

you need to have the movies encoded with a codec the PSP can play

Use a converter such as "PSP video 9" or you can lookup other converters. Or you can use handbrake (it's what I use) and follow this guide

Well, I am very impressed because I had put this question to several PSP user forums and got no reply whatever. (I suppose 99% of users are gamers and so havent used their PSP for viewing movies). I am not a gamer but would use the PSP for watching movies while commuting via bus to work. It takes 3 hours plus both ways and it's a great way to pass that time. Again, thanks man!
