Unspectacular PSP-3001 outed by the FCCby Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 14th 2008 at 1:06AM

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation/PSP_3001_Outed_by_the_FCC'; We expect a lot when Sony makes a full point update from the PSP-2001. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case as we thumb through the FCC filing of Sony's newest PSP. Then again, it's being pretty tight-lipped with most of the juicy docs well hidden in support of Sony's request for confidentiality. We can tell you that the FCC's tests were all focused on the 2.4GHz spectrum for the PSP-3001's stated use of 802.11b WiFi (nothing new there) -- no GPS, no 802.11 Draft-n, no Bluetooth. In fact, the schematic used to demonstrate the FCC ID placement looks identical to the existing PSP slim -- no evidence of that rumored mic or redesigned Home button. Guess we'll have to wait for this one to walk through the system a bit. Nevertheless, fanboys rejoice, PSP-3001 is real and this close to a formal announcement. See the label placement pic after the break.

I guess we were right but it just seems there aren't any real improvements to this PSP which makes me somewhat sad

truly ground breaking, i guess this likely pandora proof psp will convince people to pick on up.

Heh, who would have thought to check the FCC. Nice, too bad it doesn't seem to have any huge upgrades, and it will probably un-pandorable.

I hope its even lighter and slimmer than the 2001. That would be awesome.

Another redesign? I find this a slightly bad move by Sony. They need to focus more on the games for the PSP, it's becoming more and more difficult to find a good game these days...

Eh, I'll just wait and see what it has to offer.

There are other company out there that makes games, so i dont think this is a bad move for sony. They should focus more on upgrades as well as preventing piracy (If this will null pandora). No point of getting this if nothing much changed from PSP-2001.

Wow, and I'm starting to think that the rumored PSP redesign would've been tons better than ...can we even call this a redesign? What exactly does it change? I can assume unPandorable, but even that's been partially thwarted with the TA-082 or whatever motherboard. Why very slightly change the existing design if only to achieve that end?

It'll unfortunately sell, though "well" is unlikely. We all remember the rule of three, right? GBMicro all over again...

I just bought mine, good thing is that you can transfer memory sticks.
Don't worry, there is one way to flash it.

There will, within months, D-A will have a way.

Wait, is the antenna something like the IR in the phat? Or just for the Wi-Fi? Dammit Sony, fix something good!

Why are they still not considering a second analogue stick? This may be a tiny redesign but I can't see why they just go and make a PSP2 instead of tiny changes?
