Long before PSGroove was released, Kararto started working on his own PSJailbreak version using the N900 phone. -- He has finally been totally successfully on getting it to work. -- But sadly, since the release last night, his site been totally hammered and I can't update this post correctly with all the right technical info, or the released files, called PSFreedom.

It is called PSFreedom and it works on the N900 devices.

So here’s how it works.. download the .tar.gz, extract it, copy the files to your n900 (with scp, into /root), then ssh into your N900 and type : ./psfreedom-enable.sh

Then you can follow the usual procedure, unplug the PS3 from power, plug in the N900, connect the power to the PS3, then press power and *quickly* press the eject button… Then just let the magic happen!

Once you’re done or want to revert back to the normal operation mode of the N900 (or to charge it) run the command ./psfreedom-disable.sh

In the future, we’ll have a nice package to install, a GUI application, I’ll make use of the LEDs to show you the status of what it’s doing, and i’ll have it auto-revert to mass storage mode, so you can use your N900 not only to enable homebrew but also to store your homebrew!

See you tomorrow! Good night!

Would be nice if it was on a more popular phone, but oh well. I'm still waiting for the PSP version, but until then I guess I'll just save up for one of those USB flash programers or w/e they're called.

Great news, but why the n900? That's so random!

Linux
yeah, n900 runs a mobile OS that is closest to an original linux distro(maemo if i recall correctly, which is partially based on debian i think), making it much easier to "mess" with on the low levels this "exploit" works on.
i expect if this will be made possible on a different phone, the next one will probably be an android phone(android is linux too, though a lot more modified and a bit limited compared to what the n900 has)

Wouldn't it be possible to use a pc for this stuff? When you remove the power part from a usb cable, you prevent the machine's toasting each other, so what's the problem?

Was quite surprised to read about this earlier today. Anyways, sure enough it does work well enough. It requires the stock kernel for the n900 though and will not function with the power kernel.

In any case, saved myself some cash for the moment!

yes and no.
a USB-in port can't just simulate a USB device, so you'd have to put something in between, which defeats the purpose of this(making a PS3hack without needing to buy additional hardware)

Computer usb ports are USB Host
The port needed for PSgroove is USB Slave
To turn a USB Host on a computer into a Slave would take masses of arbitrary code.
It's never going to happen
However, PSP, Ipod Iphone,n900 and other phones and tablets are USB slave

It's great that this is possible. There's also someone working on a TI-84 (calculator) version.
I heard about that. Turns out I have a TI-84. Now I just need a PS3
