If you do it correctly it's great, if you don't it's not good.
Most games require title redirection and overclocking. I mean title redirection is an automatic when it comes to Retroarch switch. You're missing out on extra RAM that too many games need. Can't just go to album, you need to hold down R on a Switch game when you launch it and then go to Retroarch.

PPSSPP standalone has great compatibility and is a bit better perfomance wise than RA core. I have over 20 games and most of them are fullspeed. Even gta vcs is at stable 30 (with GLES2 ver) with minor stutters when loading chunks of zones, but its totally playable. I've recently completed Dante's inferno, its fullspeed (had only 1 major bug where it always crashed at a certain spot so i had to progress to the next checkpoint on pc and then continue on switch after that again). Daxter, Def Jam FfNY, SSX on Tour, MGS PW, Tekken 6, Prince of Persia Revelations, those are just my examples - all of them are fullspeed and playable (maybe with some minor bugs). Overall switch handles psp very well.
Edit: there are also 60 fps cheats and other patches you can try if you care. For example you can bind right stick to camera movement with a cheat in GTA VCS.

Standalone is more stable, less crashes than in RA. Many games run better on stock clocks in standalone when in RA you need a slight OC (this may have changed with the recent updates tho). Some games like GTA VCS and some others are almost unplayable in RA due to major stutters, when in standalone you can just use GLES2 build and the game would run fine. You can easily enable/disable cheats inside standalone when in RA you need to manually edit them (on pc or somewhere else) to turn on/off. But regarding the compatibility i'd say both standalone and RA core are almost on par with each other, but in terms of stability i'd always go for standalone.
And on top of that why not just use both? No need to copy roms for each emu, just set the same path for both and use the one where the game performs better.
