Hacking Possiable ways to softmod the Wii

Enough speculation from warez kiddies, people with as few as one post, and wholly ignorant people.

If you don't know what you're talking about, your speculations are about as good as me saying the solution is peanut butter.
That's like saying you aren't aloud to speculate about life on other planets because you don't know much of anything about Astronomy.

Your analogy would've actually worked, had you said "everyone with a telescope thinks they can be an astronomer".

See, the problem here is that people with absolutely no technical prowess are basing their speculation around a few key technical phrases and trying to pass themselves off like they know a thing or two.

Speculation is fine, as long as you're within your league. As soon as you start spouting off jargon, it becomes an annoyance.

No, you're not allowed to speculate about life on other planets unless you have a degree in Biology. Stop using broken logic warez kiddies, it's getting old. Also, it's "allowed" not "aloud." Punch your English teacher in the face for me, mm'kay?

this actually interested me, did anyone else think about this.

Somewhat (or maybe completely) off topic question:
Does the dvd file system allow for files of size larger than 4 GB? If so couldn't this rule out the need for usb iso loading due to fat/fat32 file size issues, by burning the iso as a file rather than fitting the image over the disk? Obviously the dvd drive is fast enough as that's how games are normally played. Also to make things clear, I have absolutely no coding knowledge and I'm not saying LOLOL THIS IS TEH SECRETZ TO WII SOFTMOD!!!11!!1. Just, if an isoloader does pop up, could this be a viable solution for how to load the game rather than trying to pass of a burned game as a genuine encrypted disc?

so....youre saying that we could use the DVD drive for mass storage of an .iso file, and load it that way, so SD size limit could be bypassed, and this already obeys the limits that the DVDread library (which is yet unreleased) sets forth.....we can't load a wii backup, but we can read files, and an .iso is a file....

hmmm......I am thinking if the DVD filesystem doesnt really support it, we could still make it work....a lot of game systems use "bad" filesystems....if this is viable, it is still gonna need a homebrew executable to launch such a loader with access to starlet in ways no one has really figured out yet....any comments?

also, the main problem I see is an iso telling the system where the drive will access different data, because I am fairly...make that completely positive, that the data would not be in the same place "in-file" as "on-disc" and that is no small problem...

so this very well may not be viable....but Im not one to tell everyone not to think and/or ttry

teq and linkinworm...im listening for what you have to say in particular

also

wouldnt the drive actually NOT be fast enough...because it would be reading inside one big file (container) instead of individual files....i dunno, i just liked the idea

and....hows the FFCC MlaaK comin? if you care to share.

continuing from the topic that was locked, i'd like to add a thought...

It would be good if no "softmod" was EVER released, but instead an "iso loader" because the thought of having a laser never die sounds good....but I like pirates to still have to buy a modchip. Come on, they're pretty damn cheap and easy to get...

Unfortunately, you'd have to keep buying flash memory.
Two reasons:
1. Most likely, you're going to fit only one Wii game per USB stick or SD card or whatever you decide to use.
2. If you keep rewriting to that poor stick of flash, well - just remember there's a limited amount of write cycles that you can perform.

Volkov, are you retarded, or do you just play one on GBATemp?

The USB can only be used at 1.1, and the SD card has to be formatted to FAT32, and is limited to 2gig!

YOU CANNOT PUT A 4GIG ISO ON A 2GIG CARD, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU CRAM IT IN!

Do you even know the probability of a laser "dying"?? You'd have a better chance to win a $1 billion lottery, TWICE!

The way a "softmod" would work is to trick the Wii into thinking ALL disc's inserted are Wii signed and authentic discs. You'd still need to do that with an "ISO" loader, and you'd still have to put it on a DVD.

usb mass storage device? What about my USB 500GB hard drive?

zidane_genome - I'm not talking about SD card everyone knowns by now that is stupid...

also, I realise the 1.1 could be written to read 2.0 as the wii has that capability but that's probably a harder task that it sounds. The only other option is to read over wifi, not sure on wifi speed though. But then it will probably be a sofmod..

Hell, the replacement lasers are still way cheaper than other consoles anyways

Ok, 500Gig HardDrive, reading at USB 1.1...

Even to load an play WiiSports, it would be UNBEARABLE!!!

It would take a good 15 mintues to load the game into memory, and every time you chose a new sport, it'll take another 15 mintues-30 mintues to load into memory!

USB 1.1 had a max transfer rate of 12Mbits (1.5Mbytes) per second.
The Wii's DVD drive has a native read speed of 6x, which is 7.93Mbytes per second.

So, using your 500gig USB hard drive, your running at about 5.3x SLOWER than the DVD drive.

5 TIMES SLOWER!!

Do you understand now?

'Do you even know the probability of a laser "dying"?? You'd have a better chance to win a $1 billion lottery, TWICE!'

You just like to flame, don't you? Lasers die very often, usually not to overuse but manufacturing defects, but it happens.

'YOU CANNOT PUT A 4GIG ISO ON A 2GIG CARD, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU CRAM IT IN!'

Not heard of 'scrubbing' which puts many wii games under 2GB?

'It would take a good 15 mintues to load the game into memory, and every time you chose a new sport, it'll take another 15 mintues-30 mintues to load into memory!

The 3 seconds it takes to load normally x5.3 =/= 30 minutes

Really, you are the one giving gbatemp a bad name

And when you Scrub your Wii ISO's, how big do they turn out? 4.3gig? the Scrubbing just replaces the empty space with 0x00 so when you compress with WinRAR or WinZip, that space is removed, making the games MUCH smaller. Even if you put that zip/rar on an SD card, you still need to uncompress it. And where are you going to put that 4.3gig image?

You really don't know how the Wii works if you think it only takes 3 seconds to load a game... don't you ever wonder about that "safety" message? That's a pre-loader... it's loading the game into memory so it can run.

If you'd actually take the time to pay attention, you'd learn... and what kind of Wii do you have that EVERY game loads in 3 seconds? My copy of Brawl takes a good 5 seconds to load...

and PS, I said between 15-30 mintues... not 30 minutes period... if your going to quote someone, at least do it right!

fat is limited to 2gb, fat 32 is much larger than that

I'm not talking about the size limits of a FileSystem...

The Wii cannot read SD cards bigger than 2gb (some people have gotten their Wii to read a 4gb SD card, but it can only see 2gb)

I'd rather carry 40 discs than carry a 500GB hard drive.
Saves electricity and a bit of space (in a disc case or something).

Even using Wifi, the max transfer rate is 54mbps.
Not including overhead and stuff.
Even at 54mbps, that's still only a little less than 7MB per second.
That's if everything is perfect.

psp can play ISOs over wifi on the B band which is 11mb/s it takes a while to load some stuff, sometimes it wont load a menu or anything, but its still pretty fast, psp only has 32mb ram in the phat aswell(or was it 4mb ram, that could be the video ram, im not sure)
