@WhoAmI? My 3ds is completely untouched basically. It is currently on firmware 2.2, but I was planning on updating it to 4.5, however, I could update it to 9.x if that would be better.
I have never used any sort of flashcart or done any cfw on the 3ds so it is untouched. Will I still be able to install rxTools on a 9.x system without any problems, and without having to use any 3rd party device? I have heard that it is safer to install it on a 4.x system first? I was told that I may not be able to run the browser exploit if I upgrade past 4.5 before installing rxTools. Thoughts?
The browser exploit WILL be launchable on firmwares between 4.x and 9.2. rxTools is bootable via 3 entry points:
1.) Cubic Ninja
2.) MSET (The settings application)
3.) Spiderhax (The web browser)
A flashcard is NOT needed to launch rxTools. Since you're on 2.x, I recommend that you update to 4.x first, this is because of mset.
If you DON'T have the web browser installed, then I highly recommend that you upgrade to 4.x. Once on 4.x, install the rxTools MSET ROP chain via a DS mode flashcard.
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, I would HIGHLY recommend that you do a NAND backup with Gateways menu (install the Gateway MSET ROP, if no browser is installed). Never lose this file, too many people have come here complaining about bricking their system and not being able to recover it due to not doing this step.
Advantages of an early NAND backup:
1.) A clean, untouched stock system image
2.) A valid ticket.db, that doesn't have crap in it (installing CIA's leaves a signature in this file. Not good if you're installing pirated content into sysNAND, for example)
As for the steps for updating to 9.2, there's tutorials over the forums, for that

If you get stuck, ask someone.
