I was told you need to have a legit copy of nsmb2 in order to convert it into a cia since most cias are trimmed. Does this mean I can use an untrimmed cia file off the web or request someone else's cartridge cia file on a site? I'd rather not pay 30 dollars for a game I already bought but lost.

You probably could do those, but asking for a CIA is against the rules of at least 90% of sites as that's sharing pirated content.
If you already have a legit backup that you installed, you can also just use godmode9 to dump it from your SD to a cia.

I already know the site to ask for cias so I could probably find it. Heck the CIA I have right now could be untrimmed.

since most cias are trimmed.
no they are not they are simply smaller in size because there is no need for padding to reach the cartridges memory capacity . . . if they were trimmed then you would find them in two sizes for the same cia game/app . . . or a cia trimming application for that matter

Well I guess the only way to know is to test it myself. I'll tell you guys the results when I do it.

Alright turns out you don't need the paid version of the game because I managed to load it using a cia file from the internet's. I don't know where I heard you need version but I remember it being said several times over.
