This is the one I use. It cools really well and it is silent. However, there is only one fan and it is in the middle. Therefore, I would suggest the one posted by Raven's Sage simply because you can choose where to place the fans. Whatever you do though, do not buy anything made by Targus.

Do you have any reasoning to why you shouldn't buy Targus products?

Sorry, I meant Targus laptop coolers, I have no clue how good their other products are. And I base this off my personal experience with one of their shitty-ass coolers that was overpriced, and this general buyer's guide to notebook coolers.

After reading that I won't even think of considering Targus, have you any experience with Belkin cooling pads?
Reviewers on Bestbuy & Futureshop generally tend to rate all available cooling pads poorly, and I don't think I can take their word about the cooling pads.

When I bought a Belkin cooling pad the cable was just barely long enough to reach my usb, so it was under constant stress...Didn't turn out good. In the end my parents accidentally stepped on my laptop (not their full weight) and the stand just snapped. Despite my bad luck, I thought it had a great fan on it, as it cooled really nicely.

Now, I've also had a Targus pad for a long time. (It's been well over a year now.) I'd easily recommend this to anybody, there's no doubt in my mind. If you're afraid of lead you had better stop kissing girls, since 33% of lipsticks contain an unsafe amount of lead. Many paints have lead. Jewelery does. Even candy & dried fruits can contain lead. This is a cooling pad completely surrounded by plastic, if it wasn't safe, it would not be still selling. (PS: Laws in California are retarded, they're forced to use light bulbs which have a dangerous amount of mercury in them. You're going to die faster from your light bulbs then this cooling pad.)

Well, stay away from the Zalman ones then, at least. Mine lasted a few months before it broke...There's something loose inside, & I can't even open it up to see if I could re-attach said loose screw(?).

So worth it!

Is it possible for me to buy two U2s, take the fans from one, join 2 fan sets with each other.

Size of fans doesn't necessarily match their effectiveness. It all depends on the motor (speed/strength), the fan blades (strength, direction, range), and the airflow (in front and behind the fan). Some fans are designed to spin slower with very thin blades to be virtually silent. As a result, they tend to not shift much air, so their cooling isn't so effective. Some fans have strong motors that spin very fast and very thick blades, which make a lot of noise but could prolly make the cooling pad float if left alone (not seriously) because they're that powerful.

To make it easier, just use your head. Where does the laptop get hot? Does a large area get hot, or just one small part directly under the heatsinks? Where are the air vents? Use these things to help you pick an appropriate cooling pad.

And here's an extra tip for making a laptop cooler. Power settings. Avoid using "High Performance" unless you really need it - stick to "Balanced/Recommended". If you're not doing anything intensive (e.g. playing games or watching HD movies), then stick to "Power Saver". This will downclock the CPU/GPU slightly and decrease the temperatures by a lot. You should also notice within 5 minutes that the laptop fan will get quieter. In some rather extreme cases, I've seen a drop of 20C when using Power Saver.
