So I'm trying to set up wuphax but it keeps saying that it failed to open up the backup file
Which parts have you completed and where does the error show? I copy/pasted the steps below:

1. Grab the current elf release from the releases tab.
2. Download the hackmii installer and put only the boot.elf from that zip on your sd card root.
3. Make sure to unplug any and all usb devices before following any of these steps.
4. Put the wuphax.elf into your wiiu/apps folder on your sd card and run it in homebrew launcher.
5. Press A to back up your current mii channel and inject it with wuphax.
6. After the wiiu restarted, go into wii mode and run mii channel, install homebrew channel from there.
7. To restore the mii channel just run the elf again and press B this time.

Did you do what @Dust2dust recommended doing?

It is when I am trying to inject wuphax, when I press A it says that it can't open up the backup file and nothing else. Then I go into wii mode and go to the mii channel but it still ends up just going to the normal mii channel. And yes I did do what dust2dust recommended and it was very useful

If you're doing everything as you're supposed to, there shouldn't be any errors. Are you sure you are doing everything verbatim? Everything is on the SD card where it should be? I don't remember if you said you were running CBHC or Haxchi, but that shouldn't matter.

You did 1, 2, 3, and 4? Successfully?

I am that I have followed the steps all the way up to step five. Maybe if I redownload the files for wuphax and miinstaller and replace the ones that are currently in the sd card

Yes. Definitely. Make sure your sd card, and those folders are not write protected.

If it doesn't work, it means your sd card is corrupt, or defective.
