Hacking Newer Super Mario Bros. U

Newer Super Mario Bros. U is a brand-new unofficial, fan-made hack of New Super Mario Bros. U including new levels, graphics and enemies. We're in the very early stages of development, so we need more volunteers to help finish the project!

Features:

• 8+ all-new world themes
• Brand-new levels
• New and modified enemies
• Original music

We need people who can help in these areas:

• Level Designers
• Graphic Designers (2D and 3D)
• Quality assurance

I wouldn't recommend taking on a project like this with no experience whatsoever, but you could start your own, smaller project (maybe consisting of a few levels).
As for software, you'll have to extract the RomFS of the game (or look up a Loadiine version) to access the level files, then edit them with Satoru (the same level editor that was used for Newer U itself).

Not that I know of, but all you would have to do is inject the patched rom into a DS VC game.

1.-No, there already is 3 hacks released: Other Super Mario Bros U Halloween Special, Cloudy Super Mario Bros U and Luigi Saves Christmas, also there is 3 in development: A unnamed mod by the user Rimea, Other Super Mario Bros U and New Super Mayro Bros U, and i think there is more in development

Satoru got cancelled because there is a better level editor called Miyamoto

Why are all the level editors named after nintendo employees? Were there any like that before Reggie, or did Reggie just become popular and then it just became a thing?
