Just like the title says. I'm sobbing right now. He was my favorite dog and lived to be 9 years old. I can't believe I would come home and find him dead... =(

sorry to hear that....I've never had a pet to die. Closest was me giving my dog away because I wasn't ready for that responsibility.
Thanks. That really means a lot right now. I feel like his death was my fault and I don't know why. I always took great care of him and made sure he had everything he needed/wanted.

That's the only bad part about owning pets. You outlive them by so many years, and there is no saying how long they'll be around. I lost both of my dogs that I had around me my whole life about three years back, within six months of each other. It's depressing as hell, but you'll come out a stronger person because of it.

It will take some time, and I'm certainly not going to try to give you an exact time frame. Soon enough, you'll only really talk about the good times though, and that is what really cheered me up. I couldn't dwell on the negatives when there were so many good things about my old pets, personally.

Your welcome and I'm sure it wasn't your fault. Things like this happen and as with humans, death is just something that is bound to come (though sudden death is always more painful then expected death)

That sucks man. I lost my dog of 12 years last March. Its tough but remember that your dog loved you more than anything and was probably very happy with their life.

BowlOfSpiders, So sorry for the loss of your dog and friend, Jack. I know from losing several dogs, that it really is tough and its ok to feel sad about your loss. I have found that even though I swore I didn't want to get another dog because its just too sad to lose them, I was always glad that I did get another one. It helps to remember the dogs you lost in a good way when you are living with the new one. It makes you glad to see the similar and not so similar personality traits and physical comparisons, too.
Sounds like your Jack really fit the title of "Man's Best Friend." And I agree with Nathan's comments about time will help.

Sorry to hear of your loss. 9 years is young for a dog to die, they usually live on average of about 15 years. I still miss my little buddy that died in 2000. He was a chihuahua/musky mix and was named Dinky George Bot-bot (he responded happily to any of those names). He was my best little bud and died at 14. So I know how you feel. I still miss that little guy to this day. I still regret to this day that I was not there for him the day he took his final breath.

I know it seems hard to believe now, but eventually you will get another pet and you will love him/her just as much as you loved Jack. Remember the good times with Jack, put your best pic of him up on the wall and keep all the memories in your heart. That's what I did Dinky. I can't think of any better sentiment to give to such a great friend that brought you such happiness.

I'd wait a little while before getting another pet, it's only proper, but once you do get another pet, you will love the new one just as much as you did the old one. Personally, I waited about 8 years (much longer than I should have waited, to be honest) to get another pet.....I now have a little kitty (she's a very small breed and has an extra toe on all 4 paws) and she's the most adorable kitty...happy, playful and my brother and I are the only people in the world that she trusts....so precious. I'll never forget little Dinky (he may have been small, but he had the heart of a Wolf and I'll never forget that), but Spot (kitty's name) is my new little buddy and I love her just as much and will miss her just as much when she's gone. (cats have about the same lifespan of dogs)

Try to imagine Jack being in his "perfect place", where he is frolicking and playing and doing all the things he liked best. Content yourself with the feeling that you gave Jack all the love you could and know that he loved you too. It will bring you comfort in the long run.

As long as you keep Jack in your thoughts and memories, it will make you a better person. Use what you learned with Jack and apply that same love to any future pet you may get. They will respond in kind and you will have a whole new friend with all-new memories to keep with you forever.

Never feel embarrassed for the sorrow you are feeling now. You wouldn't be human if you didn't feel what you feel now. Just know that you can feel that love again. Pets are great life lessons.

I've lost a lot of pets throughout my life. The most recent, however, was a gecko I named Don Juan. I had found it on the porch and decided to keep it as a pet. I got it a little aquarium and made it perfect for him. The other day, he got out and Alessa's cat ate him.

Before that was my brother's cat. Before I moved out of the house, I had been tasked with taking care of my brother's cat, Charizard. He usually wasn't ever around unless I was, but he sometimes went into hiding. There was one day when he did go into hiding, and when I finally found him so I could feed him breakfast, he was dead. I took him to the vet and called my brother and all this other stuff. I was blamed for the cat's death until they found out the cat had a disease (I never did find out what disease. I would've been too painful) for a long time and there wasn't anything we could have done to avoid the death.

I loved that little cat. He always made my day. He was my little companion.

I know your pain. I really do.
