Can you upgrade the standard moonshell that the R4DS uses as an OS, with the new Moonshell 1.6 beta?
If so can you please explain how?

GBATEMP rox.

Yup. Put all your moonshell files in the "shell" folder and rename the moonshell nds to "_DS_MSHL.NDS"

The new version uses a new folder which is '/moonshl'.
So start by deleting the shell folder in your R4 drive, then run the setup and after selecting the R4tf driver thing only. Make it install it in the R4 drive.

Then afterwards do as Katalyst said, rename the .nds to "_DS_MSHL.NDS"

I did what Katalyst said, but instead, I got rid of the shell folder and replaced it with the newer "moonshl" folder.

It works.

I believe the author made it optimized for R4.
Before, MP3's and movies would stutter. With this new version, they do not.

Yeah, I saw in the changelog that they changed the folder name. Granted, I renamed it back to shell and it still seemed to work

Guess it doesn't really matter. Speaking of, Final Beta 4 was just released.

And to ambitious21, as far as it being better or new changes, I can't say. There aren't any big changes to the program itself. Just looks like a lot of driver changes. Now keep in mind, all of these are unstable. The last stable version was 1.51. Here's the changelog from the site (for Final Beta 4):
QUOTEMoonShell Ver1.6 finalbeta4

This is a version that can be used with 'M3Simply/R4/SCDS/EZ5'.

The disk driver changed completely.
There is a possibility that the adaptor that has worked up to now doesn't work.
I want to ask for a lot of tests.
Attention: Start NDSROM file name was changed.
folder name '/shell' was changed to '/moonshl'.
file name 'global.ini' was changed to 'moonshl.ini'.

moonshell16finalbeta4.zip

Version 1.6finalbeta4 2007/01/05

There is no change in the main body of MoonShell.
DLDI driver changed: The NDSROM comment for R4TF was changed.
DLDI driver added: ez5s_moon.dldi EZ Flash 5 (SD Card)
EZ5 requests the firmware version 1.1. Please refer NDSROM comment window.

The moonshell program will work with either the shell (moonshl) folder existing or not. But the plugins won't be supported, such as viewing pictures, playing music won't work. Only dpg playback will work.

Weird. Everything still works here. From pictures, to music, to videos.

Since I gotta put Final Beta 4 on there now, I'll probably go ahead and leave this one as moonshl ;o
