I was reading through the comments about the possibility of hacking my Nintendo switch. But most of the posts seem to be pretty old. Mine happens to be running at the latest firmware 5.0 .2. Has the patch came out to be able to hack this? I also read that you cannot download games for free even if you hack your switch. Then what is the benefit of modding it? I was hoping to be able to download games. I did this with my Wii long time ago and was very happy. Thanks in advance for all the advice and help.

We don't talk about piracy on here, having said that I can give a more general overview of the situation.

Fusee Gelee is a bootrom exploit that works on all FW versions as this can't be patched. (The bootrom can't be updated via software updates), that is what will be used to get HB and CFW. The release for it will be this summer, but if you are above 4.1.0 you will need a minor hardmod to get it working. (Involves opening the Switch and "snipping a pin" according to the information we have currently.

Piracy will be possible, once Atmosphere (CFW) is made public, developers who want to make piracy possible will be able to modify it to support such functionality, this will not happen at launch though, presumably not before around christmas or later, and honestly the longer that takes the better...

Maybe I should have been more specific. I'm sorry about that. I own Mario Odyssey, and I own Mario and Rabbids. The problem is my six-year-old likes to play my switch. Therefore I have to worry about her losing the tiny cartridges. I wanted to be able to download those so they were permanently saved on my switch, and she will not lose them. I was not looking to download anything I don't own. I did the same thing with the weed. I took the discs I had bought, and downloaded them, so that my now 15 year-old didn't mess them up because he was only about 5 at the time.

The Switch hacking scene is still new. If you were around for the beginning of the wii, it also took a while for things to happen.

As with most hacks, it's best to find an exploitable firmware and stay there. Either that, or update and not worry about hacks.

Games will eventually be able to be run, but expect less piracy things at first. Emulators and roms are first, save editing eventually, and eventually piracy.

Be patient, these things take times. Usually years.

I was hoping that they would come out with a version of Harvest Moon 64 for the switch. I really miss that game LOL

Backups will be possible, and already is on 3.0.0 via Pegaswitch, so if that is your concern you don't need to worry, it will come relatively fast on all FW.

EDIT: "I did the same thing with the weed" nice typo

Backups aren't possible are they? Source? Pegaswitch is just for homebrew?

Pegaswitch can dump the NAND and SD card, and hactool can decrypt them if you have the masterkeys required. Thus you can make backups. Not possible to use them yet though as we don't have the signing key (or CFW allowing us to bypass the signing key)

Oh ok, I misunderstood since you were replying to an op who wanted to use them :-p

Piracy is ... not the reason people hack things.
I think we all know that plenty of people do it for that reason alone.

@TrapMom502 No cfw solution has been released yet, however a general release window of this Summer has been given to Atmosphere (cfw) + fuse-gelee (bootrom exploit). As detailed in the fuse-gelee FAQ

And in regards to your question of backup-loading; I'm sure there'll be some kind of loader eventually (After cfw is released of course). I can't think of a single hacked console that hasn't gotten one in some shape or form. (Though if one hasn't, please tell me as I like to learn about these things!)

There's currently a cartridge dumping script that was released by SciresM if that's your main concern. It's not at all useable by the common user in its current state, but it will likely either be baked into the CFW released or be added as a plugin by someone else shortly after

Edit: also +1 for the typo, I giggled after seeing that lol

I'd honestly recommend getting a second Switch for her for the time being. Expensive? Sure. But, Nintendo did say that they would release more Labo packs where multiple Switches/joycons are a must.

Wait, if you're on 4.1.0, you don't need to do any hardmods and you can install the CFW via software only? I read in another topic that anything above 3.0.0 would require hardmod, now I am confused. Would be good news because I am on 4.1.0 and I seriously don't want to open up my switch. Sadly, if it requires a hardmod, that exploit kinda became useless to me until a software only solution is available, because opening the Switch is far too risky for me.

Guess I could wait a few extra months if hardmod is absolutely required, it's not like the Switch has anything worthwhile releasing before Fall anyway (well, there is Project Octopath Traveler, but I won't lose any sleep over not playing it immediately).

4.1.0 will get a softmod option, but the release will be delayed. They know the flaw exists but it sounds like they're still coding the exploit for that particular firmware

If you're serious then just buy digital downloads instead of carts. If you're backtracking then don't bother cos most people here are pirates in denial. Expect free stuff sometime during summer.
