Ugh... Sometimes I hate myself.

Well, just so this doesn't go tl;dr, here's the short version...

Out of curiosity, I read this story/book/novel/whatchamacallit called The Girl Next Door. And now I'm quite literally in pieces, mentally speaking. My mind just kind of turned itself off or something. Kind of like shock, I guess.

I mean, throw ghosts, zombies, vampires, werewolves, aliens, the abyss, death, destruction, sickness, blood, gore, psychopaths, sociopaths, megalomaniacs, sadists, masochists, heck, throw just about anything at me in a written form, I'll be fine. Not this. Hell, I read Rage [getting it on] when I was 14, and that is banned and out of print in America after Columbine[paranoia probably, but whatevs, they needed a scapegoat], I think, and I shrugged THAT off. Again, not this.

Man, I'd expect something called "The Girl Next Door" to be some story about these girls who get over the pressures of society and get boyfriends. Huh.

The sickening thing is that this happens IRL nowadays....

It disgusts me that people do this sort of thing to eachother....it fills me with all consuming rage, anger, hate.

Worst part is that sometimes the world will just look past it and not pay any attention to it.

This world is incredibly unjust, everything in our court systems is tainted with corruption, the ones who do the right thing are punished, while the criminals get away scott free. It's not ok, it never was ok, it never will be ok.

Well, looking at it as a writer [of sorts], its presentation is simple, straightforward, and it almost never pulls its punches. That said, being as the subject matter is what it is, it just makes it worse, and adding to the fact that it's presented in first-person, it's just... Unsettling [or at least it is to me].

All in all, not the best, not the worst. But since books count so much on their content, it might not be classified as "good" per se.

I've read about the case of Sylvia Likens (TV tropes has some bizarre stuff), that the book was based on, and remember how horrified I was at the whole thing, and that was just the objective, clinical facts. I wonder if knowing the details in advance would numb me towards the horrors of the book, or if the added subjective angle of the prose would overcome this and make it even more gruesome. Either way, I bet it's not a pleasant read.

On a lighter note: the author of the book should call his son Ash
