Hacking Media Playback on vWii??

Has anybody tried to play DVDs or even BluRays on e.g. WiiMC, or is it HW related impossible?
Dvds won't work as the WiiU disc drive can only detect wii games on a genuine game dvd and blue rays won't work as the wiiu disc format is not bluray.

...but the media is. There are games bigger than what a dual layer DVD can hold. So the drive is most likely capable of reading true Blu-rays.

Its not a blue Ray drive it's using the Panasonic developed high density disc drive format that is similar to blu Ray but is not blu Ray compatible.

It's all in the semantics - it can obviously physically read BD discs ("optical discs with a certain reflection peak wavelength, track pitch, etc ") since that's what Wii U games are made of, but the disc drive's firmware actively blocks reads of BDs ("optical discs containing general purpose data, movies, music, etc as commonly stored in BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE discs used on computers" - or rather any disc not positively identifiable as Wii or WiiU semiproprietary format disc)

The same is true in Wii D3v2 or D4 drives (excluding obviously the bluray part, and maybe including GC-format whitelisting - dunno)

Nothing forbids you from using an external optical drive (except the fact media players supporting them may not exist) :D
