I was wondering what the longest running RPG series was with a recurring protagonist. (i.e. Adol appeared in Ys 1-7.)
Preferably, name a series that has been localized to English and doesn't have a lot of spin-offs to get it to the "longest running" recognition (remakes are okay).

The Legend of Zelda games aren't really RPGs, more Action-Adventure titles (not to mention the theories about each Link not being the same Link).

I'd probably say Adol too, from what I can remember there are very few RPGs that keep the same protagonist for more than a few titles.

Yeah, my guess would be Adol from the Ys series too.

If it doesn't have to be a protagonist, there's a Cid character in every FF game I've played at least. He's not the same individual through the series though, even if most of them are tech guys, and has something to do with airships.

If you just want a recurring protagonist, look no further than Mario. Main character in each of his main titles, and has even taken a spin on the RPG style of games. Other than that, Adol is definitely the most long running recurring characters.

Ryu from Breath of Fire and Maxim from Lufia come close (1993), though Ys definetely has been around longer.

Does Ganbare from Ganbare Goemon (198-something) count?

Isn't the character named Goemon and not "ganbare"?

No.

Also, I think the longest running RPG hero (or villain, sometimes) is Cid.

Lolno. He's not that old and isn't even the protagonist in two of the KH games.

Probably Adol from Ys as said. RPGs seem to have a terrible knack for changing protagonists a lot. I guess it's just when they make a bagillion games in the series (like Final Fantasy) it'd be getting staler than it already is if they kept the same dude.

I think it's the same. Just different on where you live.

Also, you're all wrong. It's "The Hero" from the Dragon Quest games. Bam, solved it.

Wrong too, In DQ 5 (or 4? I don't remember which one I played on Snes) the story span over generations. You start as the dad then play the son, even if this is "the Hero" it's not the same person.

I can't think of any other RPG.
I remember Ultima (1->9), is the hero (Avatar) always the same to come back to Britania ?.
