Hacking it's been 9 years. please help!

hi everyone. last time i booted up my wii was about 9 years ago. but my son has decided he wants to use it, so i've dug it out! i previously soft-modded it so i could load backed up games from a usb disk. this used to work fine, but not anymore

my wii is 4.1E and it still has HC installed and USB loader GX, but i can't get it to see the USB disk

tbh, all the apps will be years out of date, so i figured it might be best to re-mod it. what's the best and simplest way to approach this?

If you have the Homebrew Channel installed you can download and use snes9x, Retroarch, mgba (Gameboy Advance), Not64 (Nintendo 64), Wiisxr (Playstation) for example. There should be a programm to update your wii for the usb loader gx.
