Hacking Issues with IOS58 & Using External HDD

Hello all!


This is my first post & I'm fairly new to the Wii modding scene. I'd say my experience so far has been me following various Youtube videos in an attempt to learn & fix issues I'm dealing with. The first Youtube video I watched was by A2Z Geek titled "A Complete Guide to Hacking the Wii (2017) 4.3"
& then I watched Tech James "Jailbreaking the Wii complete Guide." Looking back, I should have just used ModMii... but I was not aware of this.


Besides the (4.3U) Wii, this is my current Hardware setup: (Purchased from Amazon)


SanDisk 2GB MicroSD / TransFlash Card w/SD Adapter camcorder

WD 1TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBUZG0010BBK-WESN


(SD card is used for smaller homebrew files & External is used for larger ISOs & Roms) (External HDD is FAT32 plugged into the correct port


Everything seemed to be working fine & dandy initially. I was able to complete the first video tutorial that I posted. I was also able to run USB Gx Loader & boot any Wii game. So, I figured Nintendont would be just as smooth. NOPE. Every time I try to run Nintendont, I get the message "Loading IOS58 Kernel." The Wii stays on this screen & I slowly cry. There is little to no information on someone having this exact issue & finding a solution. I spent countless hours researching anything that might be of use... but maybe my newbie brain is not wrapping my mind around Wii mods.


From here I tried Dios Mios. Clocks in a little bit lower than Nintendont (which I prefer Nintendont), but it should work. NOPE. Dios Mios would boot up & show the 2 available games on the external hard drive, but would black screen after selecting a game to play.


So, I decided to move on & see if I could get the WiiSXR, Wii64, & Sega emulators to work. Each emulator boots up fine but I receive "Error opening directory "usb:/wiisxr/isos." I try to tweak the settings around, but it's almost as though my HDD isn't recognized by these emulators. WADs seem to work fine however.


I'm running myself into the ground trying to figure this out. With all of the unique guides covering various aspects of Wii modding, it's hard to get exactly what you want out of your Wii.


I hate to say it, I even attempted to use PimpMyWii. But I kept it manual & didn't dive too deep into it.


Wii Games STILL work, even off of the external HDD. But emulators that boot through the External HDD do not. Any help would be very appreciated <3

I think you're looking in the wrong place. How is the drive formatted and partitioned? Is it GPT or MBR? Is it FAT32, NTFS, WBFS, Linux ext2?

Best compatibility is MBR with one FAT32 partition. The syscheck report looks ok so stop reinstalling IOSes.

Could you explain Gpt or Mbr to me in more detail? I formatted the drive to Fat32 after receiving it from Amazon. I used a random program I found on the internet to format it. I will try reformatting it using Modmii once I get home from work. Thanks @GreyWolf

GPT and MBR are types of partition tables. MBR is the old style one and GPT is newer and generally associated with UEFI on PCs.

USB Loader GX and Nintendont support GPT but most other homebrew does not so it will be unable to read the drive because it can't understand the partition table.

Also, in regards to running Wii games cIOSes and NEEK/SNEEK/neek2o do not support GPT for files.

Things that require MBR/FAT32 to work: cIOS emuNAND, NEEK, DIOS MIOS, (probably) Devolution

You can tell which partition table type the drive is using with the DISKPART command in Windows. It's a command line utility. Type "LIST DISK" and it will show you a list of the connected drives with a * in the GPT column if it's configured that way.

can confirm that drive works, i have that one
however for compatibility and being easier, i have it in fat32 with 32k clusters
and yeah, MBR

Just out of curiosity, how long will it take to format my 1 TB external HDD from NTFS to FAT32 with 32k clusters? Also, I'm assuming I can't just use the quick format option on the program "FAT32 GUI Formatter." Is this correct? I tried to use this tool earlier & it sat at 0% for 10 hours X_X

I'm currently using Minitool Partition Wizard Free 10.2.2 & it feels like it's taking ages lol.

Quick formatting should work whether you're changing partition type, filesystem, or both. It's almost never necessary to do a full format on a drive nowadays.

But yeah, a full format of a 1TB drive will take a while.

Thank you both @GreyWolf & @migles!! Everything seems to be working now besides the "Loading IOS58 Kernel" screen freeze upon booting into Nintendont. Is it possible that there is a different GC emulator that doesn't utilize IOS58?

yes, Dios Mios that is but you already knew it. Not sure if Devolution requires ios58 but it sure requires you to have the legit game.
try reinstalling stock ios58.
what is the version of Nintendont you are using? You sure have the latest meta.xml that comes with it?
If all else fail, you may want to read the OP of the official Nintendont thread and ask for help there.

Devolution also uses IOS 58.
