I bought AV2HDMI but I'm going to send it back because it didn't improve the picture quality at all. It really is just an upscale and nothing more.

I've seen videos of PS2 HDMI and seems to look a bit better? What do y'all say?

Not sure of PS2 HDMI, but if you don't have to solder anything, it's probably just going to be an upscale. But some upscalers are better than others (Framemeister is the most popular of the upscalers), so it might be worth it for you. Everyone's idea of "acceptable" seems to be a bit different, so I suggest just watch some videos and screenshots and decide for yourself.

Not sure of any ps2 projects like there are for nintendo products (nes hdmi, n64 ultradhdmi, etc). But one can dream.

The PS2HDMI adapters only support up to 480p in most cases and while other upscalers like the retrotink or OSSC don't increase the input resolution as well, they preserve the quality of the low-resolution image as good as possible while the PS2HDMI uses a really cheap analog to digital converter that adds a lot of noise to the image.
To get the analog signal to those upscalers, a well-shielded cable is needed as well that costs at least 30$ ontop of the 100$+ that the usable upscalers cost.
Citrus3000psi works on an internal HDMI mod that will hopefully be cheaper and more eay to use, but he focuses on getting PS1 HDMI support running atm.

One can actually increase the PS2 resolution mostly to 480p from 480i with the homebrew application GSM or game-specific cheats for Persona 3 FES for example.
Having a progressive image is pretty substantial and makes the standard definition image more pleasant to look at.
Other options to increase resolution are only emulators and while the purei PS2 emulator steadily improves, the only usable emulator still is PCSX2 which isn't really maintained anymore and runs pretty underwhelming even with good hardware such that 4k runs slow, it is still 32 Bit, so more than 4 GB RAM can't be used, many visual effects need to be disabled using hacks because of a lack of accuracy and so on.

Not true, I use a PS2toHDMI on my PS3 that has a broken HDMI port and it outputs 1080p just fine. Most of the cheap adapters don't upscale they just convert whatever is outputted to straight digital signal.

@MrCokeacola Because of that I wrote "in most cases" as my two versions of the PS2HDMI crashed with more than 480p input from my PS2.
And while the PS2HDMI has no upscaling option, the retrotink can scale 240p to 480p and the OSSC can pass the input resolution as output, but also allows for modifications of the scaling factor of everything below 1080p input resolution.

No such solution exists yet, but citrus3000psi and chriz2600 (the guys behind WiiDual) is working on a solution. As far as I know, they have a prototype ready, but they wanted to make a solution for PS1 before releasing a finished version

I use some HD Retrovision cables with my framemeister. If you can only get one thing I'd suggest you get some good component cables like the HD Retrovision or the official Sony ones. If you don't care about 480p and above I hear that RAD2x cables are an all in one HDMI RGB solution that look very nice(they're made for PS1 but they're apparently a good choice for PS2 as well).

My problem with the PS2HDMI is that it crushes blacks and adds extra noise to the picture.

Although I haven't used the PS2 version, I have used the "Wii 2 HDMI" adapters which look the same, and I assume the internals are the same. They are little component to HDMI converters, the Wii ones to me worked fine and looked good, which still being cheap and not as expensive as some $100+ adapter.

Also the convenience factor, because many new TVs have only HDMI ports.

That AV2HDMI one obviously just converts that nasty composite signal. Never use those unless you have no other option.
