I already have a jailbroken iPad running 5.1.1, I want some apps that require a newer version so whats the best way to install new iOS and jailbreak if possible?

EDIT....so I guess jailbreak for 7.1.1 is a no go, if I still want to update is just hooking up to iTunes enough or do I have to be concerned because its already jailbroken. Updating would just simply remove the jailbreak no worries?

In order to update a jailbroken device, you should always do a restore from DFU mode through iTunes. That way, the entirety of the firmware is guaranteed to be replaced by new stock firmware. If you restore from a back-up of a jailbroken device, settings left by jailbreak tweaks and apps will be left in the system files, but they will have absolutely no effect on the phones performance (other than taking a few bytes of storage).
