Haven't watched since the '90s (I do occasionally think about rewatching), but my best tip is that you've gotta want to believe.

The only advice I can give is to persist, and not to expect a great deal of closure (if any) to anything - it's all unexplained phenomena after all...

The worst thing about The X-Files is the twisting, drawn-out, over-arching mythology that, if you have to take an extended break from it, there's a good chance you'll have no idea what the hell's going on when you get back to it; actually, I'd give it a 95% chance that'll happen either way.

It's one of those shows I loved as a kid, but despite repeated attempts to watch it fully, I'd have to take a break and, again, I have no idea what's going on when I come back to it as it ends up pulling from so many different plot threads the further on it goes...

I've just checked where I got up to on the most recent rewatch and apparently there's only three episodes of the original run to go (and I still have no idea what's going on)

The best thing about the The X-Files is, of course, the earlier seasons where they were more self-contained and it was all still a fresh experience.

Take that as you will.

My advice is to watch it on evenings, in your bed : it's a great show to fall asleep to ! I watched it in the 2010's (never watched it before) and found out it's better than a sleeping pill

What to play in the background of videos to?

I don’t know what you mean by this but don’t do anything but have the show on the screen in a dark room. Turn off phones, turn off any other device, curtains closed. Really adds to the experience. I suspect it’s also how Chris Carter would have wanted it.

I don’t think the later seasons are bad, but they aren’t as good. I think the MOTW episodes are a little less interesting after Mulder because their dynamic isn’t as good, nor is season 9 with Reyes, but I still think the mythogy arc is good regardless, and I really love the finale.
