As all old .elf files are in a wrong format and the HBC refuses to load them, nearly everybody uses .dol files now. Maybe the new .elf files you get with the latest DevKitPro are fine, but until now nodody bothered to post test results with these. So the best ways to load .dol files on your Wii are the homebrew channel or a channel of WiiSend.

WiiSend is a program for loading .dol files on your Wii streamed from a pc to your Wii via wifi:

HBC does not load ELF neither DOL files from SD-Gekko MCARD adapter

Loadmii claim to be able to load from SD-Gekko but I don't know if it supports ELF files

there are ELF->DOL converters available though

I got the converter, converted the boot file from .elf to .dol, yet when I tried to load it through LoadMii, I got some long error.

MAME is not like other emulators, it's not a standalone port, it's a cross-compiled version running on gc-linux
so you have to put gc-linux stuff on the sdcard first

as usual, read the installation manual before asking: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/SDL_MAME

since you are using a SDCARD, you dot not need LoadMii, juste use the HBC to load the dol

SDCARD !=MEMCARD

    SylverReZ @ SylverReZ: Also nice. Never really watched Fallout on Prime, but sounds like a good show. +1
