How do I improve at MvC2?

Ever since I saw it in the arcades, I've loved Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I bought the xbox live version, and I love it, but I notice players I see on youtube, and just other videos in general, seem to be a lot better than I am. I'll admit I'm a button masher, so with that in mind, I'd like to improve my skills. Does anyone here have any good tips to get started?

Learn combos and practice like a bitch.

1: pick overpowered characters. I forget who but I think it was Cable, Storm and ...someone.
2: Learn combos. You'll never be good at any fighter by button mashing (might be able to take out AI, but not any player other then a button masher).

Check out youtube for combos, go to practice mode and practice recreating them.
