I believe you need a arbitrary PS3 game disk in the drive to boot games off the HDD.

I used to use kmeaw 3.55 and multiman. Only certain (very few) games needed a disc in the drive. I used to use a usb drive to copy games onto the internal drive and it worked perfect. Last game I played was Crysis 2 before the YLOD struck, it didn't require a disc.

Yes it is possible. And its a lot of hard work getting games to work without a disk in the drive.I had the same problem when i first hacked my PS3 then i bit the bullet and got a laser from Ebay.
Get a new laser its well worth it!
