And I don't mean a kart racer... Most Wanted U looked promising, I just can't get over the crash animations. Is there any Wii U (or even Wii) racer that lets me just drive around the game world for hours? It's what I like to do, one game I enjoyed that way was Midnight Club: LA on PS3. Anything similar for Wii U (available / coming)? Thanks!

I think Most Wanted has free roaming, at least the PS2 one did.

The PS2 version (what I like to call the Ultimate Original Best Racing Game Ever Edition) is VERY different to the extremely crappy and overdone piece of steaming scrap that is Most Wanted (2012). Original was super fun and I played it on my GameCube. Hands down my favorite racer ever. :)

I know you said no kart racers but Sonic and Sega All-Stars Transformed is pretty kick ass, probably the closest thing you'll get to a kart racer with competitive mechanics.

Dude I love that game... with friends. All I want is free roam cruising in a game. Preferably a huge open world I can just drive around in. Kart racer don't have that, you must race. I want to enjoy the scenery, solo.

Do NOT get the remade most wanted on the wii-u. The worst game ever made, crashes constantly. No car mod designs like on the old games, extremely boring map. No story, no unlocking (everything is given to you right from the start) and just awful awful music.

On topic: There is no decent racing game on the wii-u. Im secretly hoping the port GRID 2 but im fairly certain they wont. If you want a good racing game, just play the original Most wanted on PC, it should work on whatever pc you have these days, the graphics still hold up imo and its the best game racing game that will ever be made.

you speak as if most wanted is worse than Need for speed Nitro for the wii, there's nothing worse than that

What about that Project CARS thing? The dev used to make some Need for Speeds too. I just don't know what kind of a game it's going to be like but time will tell.

And yeah, new Most Wanted is worse than an old can of tuna gone bad. :)
EDIT: I should add I have no PC, hence I play games on a Wii U.

Would Lego City Undercover fit the bill? Does it have free roaming?

I bought Lego City not thinking much of it but after playing it I 100% that game and loved every minute of it. Yes, it does have free roaming and actually encourages you to do so to find all secrets and new areas. It doesn't have awesome racing or realistic driving but its very big and open world. You can also customize cars and each costume for you lego character. Lego City may come off as a child's game but trust me its a blast.

I'll give it a try, thanks for suggesting it! I believe the limited Edition was on sale at my Gamestop so it doesn't hurt to try :)
