Gaming Going to start pokemon, what are the differences ?

Try Pokemon Platinum Enhanced (a modded version of Pokemon Platinum). I just started playing it, but it seems really good. Trading evolutions have been replaced, you can catch all 493 pokemon, and the difficulty of the game has been amped up in various ways.

The regular games are much more fun than any of the modded versions out there. In my opinion, the modded games are there for when you get bored with the normal games, not vice versa.

Don't agree with this at all, I find the modded versions much more enjoyable.
Things like stronger trainers, more diverse Pokemons and new storylines makes me way more interested then the regular boring and bland games.

Definately skip the regular game and go with Platinum Enhanced. It's enhanced, not completely new. It's better to play Platinum enhanced on a first playthrough, because NOBODY want's to play pokemon twice over. At least I don't.

Maybe I should specify that Platinum Enhanced is a different sort of beast. It's not a new mod, like new characters, new story etc..

It's merely the same game as pokemon platinum, with a lot of LITTLE changes that add up to a great game. Like different starters, allowing you to catch all the pokemon in wild grass, some humorous lines of text sprinked here and there. It just makes Platinum a more enjoyable experience, it's not an entirely different game.

Agreed with the above. The modded versions usually aren't that great either, Platinum Enhanced is a nice example of that.

I recommend you to get Platinum since its a mix of Pearl and Diamond and you get all three legendaries in it just like how you get Groudon, Kyogre and Rayquaza in Emerald. You should also get Soul Silver or HeartGold just to get Lugia/Ho-Oh and w/e new pokes will be in it. Happy gaming =).

My advice (if you're not in it for the graphics) would be to start from the first generation. And if you are in it for graphics, you can try the remakes of the first generation games for the GBA.

Yeah ev training is pointless even for someone as hardcore as me (i had the nerve to play my preordered diamond for 250 hours the first time through)
I finally beat platinum last week (can't wait for english HG/SS)

Well, I started platinum as already said.
I like the game so far, I've only beaten a couple of trainers. I'm getting confused about wich pokemons to lvl up. And at what time in the game I should get a second, third, fourth etc one. For the moment I have 4 pokemon, chinchar ( monkey baby !!!! ), that little electricity thing, sorry I'm bad with the pokemon names, the crazy duck ( captured it because he looks so funny and stupid ) and the rock dude. ( geodude I think it is ). I have the impression that I will have to do a lot of grinding to have all my pokemons at a descent level.

you should get new pokemon as soon as you can, and if you see one you dont' have, catch it. try to keep a well balanced team as far as types go, and try to learn what is weak against what

The last time I went to a Pokemon tourney was probably... a year ago? Well I am sure there is still some but not as much as before. When I use to go, the cash prize was quite decent.

When you get to hearthome city, enter the building next to the pokemon center and get the eevee. Evolve it to espeon. It comes in handy.

The difference between Diamond and Pearl is that one game has specific Pokémon that you can catch and can only be catched on that game. Diamond = Get to catch Dialga ; Pearl = Get to catch Palkia.
