Superman was designed by John Dunn and released for the Atari 2600 in 1978. This action-adventure gem proves that sometimes great things come in really small packages, 4KB to be exact.

Superman for Atari takes place in the city of Metropolis. Lex Luthor and his henchmen are up to no good, and have just destroyed a bridge. Superman must repair the damage, put the culprits in jail, and return to the daily planet to get his tale into the evening edition. During this epic little adventure Superman has the ability to fly, which will allow him to transverse the city in a matter of minutes. With the aid of x-ray vision he will be able to see which areas, enemies, or key locations surround his current position. Using his super strength he can carry the 3 separated bridge pieces back to where they belong and single handedly escort the criminals to the Metropolis jail. If gun toting thugs weren't enough, dangerous floating bits of power-sucking kryptonite are all around you. Touch one and only a kiss from Lois Lane will heal you.

Games for the Atari 2600 that really stood out were those that pushed the systems limits and the creativity of the designer. With so many limitations they had to convincingly pack a lot into a small space. Thankfully the city of Metropolis was not neglected, and was carefully implemented through the use of minimalistic background images. These images never repeat and were assigned different colors, making it possible to memorize various paths to different goals. The greatest of which is beating the game in the shortest amount of time.

Superman for the Atari 2600 is not one to be missed. Experienced players will be able to win the game in just a few minutes, yet each time through is more enjoyable than those that came before. If you have never played it then grab it and give it a try, we recommend it!

I remember playing this when I was really, really young. gooood times...
Me too! I had totally forgotten about this game, but first glance at those screenshots immediately brought back so many memories.

I still have my Atari packed away along with a bunch of carts(which I know Superman should be among them). I can't believe I haven't played it in so long. I'm gonna have to bust it out and see if it still works.

Excellent recommendation, AW.
