Weird article, but then I also read an article the other day claiming the reason MMOs are addictive is because of the fact they are paid for services.

Where do these retards get their demographic references from anyway?

I'm 47 and I feel positively invisible when it comes to game statistics. To me the average gamer is a teenager. And teen depression is pretty much just part of the process of growing up. Right up there with facial hair or menstrual cycles arriving or your first wet dream or obsession with growing tits. You teens certainly have plenty of things messing with your heads eh.

the majority of people who play games and suffer from depression may not even realize it since their mind is absorbed in their games.

Panzer is making some very good points here.
Kids have so much to be weighing on their minds as it is!
I tell you what though, I still have an obsession with tits.

I'm starting to feel old in the gaming world, but when I look around me I realize how many other older gamers there are, and it make me feel young again.

I think that at nearly 50 though you are a bit above the statistics.
This is something that I suspect is changing as our generations grow up completely involved in games.
I can't even remember a time in my life that didn't have games in it, and I doubt that this trend will change.
As we get older we are not going to put down the controllers....or natals or whatever we wind up with next.

Panzer, I know several people in your strata that still game frequently, don't feel too old!

I don't think those depressions are caused by the games themselves, but more by the gamer's own habit of spending more time in the house playing video games than working, socializing or working out. I think it could be caused by any other hobby that takes a lot of time and is performed in the house, like surfing on the internet, listening to lots of music, watching a lot of TV, reading a lot of books or simply studying or working at home, or being creative.
It can all lead to overweight and loss of social contacts, which is then more reason for them to spend more time at the house and communicate even less with other people. And how can you not be depressed living a life like that?

There was a time when I basically didn't leave the PC unless it was for school, homework or every once in a while visiting someone or being visited.
Can't say that was the happiest time of my life, but I surely wasn't depressed in a way that needed some kind of professional attention, I just felt down and disappointed, stuff like that.
However, I wasn't just gaming on my PC, I spent a lot more time on the PC just browsing the web, chatting, listening to music...I don't think it made any difference at all.

Anyway, I think being obese and having few social contacts is a really bad way to live. Obese people often say being fat is no problem at all for them, that it doesn't affect their live...Whatever. I thought that once, too (and I'm not even that fat), but I can't go on like that. Unless you're one of those super happy looking, super confident, super bearded people who kinda seem to enjoy being fat as a lifestyle, being fat is a major hurdle in pretty much every aspect of life. You start moving less and less, and with every pound you gain it gets a lot harder to get back in shape. You feel ugly, less confident, you never score with a member of the opposite sex (or whatever you're looking for), have little interest in regularly meeting other people, and get really lazy in general...
However, once your hobby has become the supreme experience for you, it's hard to even bother doing anything else.

One thing leads to another, and while gaming may be one possible cause for this kind of lifestyle, I'm convinced it's the laziness and/or obesity that finally makes you stick to it.

Wow I got to be honest...I use to be depressed but that wasn't from playing video games. It was from the fact being inside a ghetto school during junior high school. I didn't know how to socially adept to their ways which I didn't but in the end I'm kind of anti-social because I don't go outside chat with other people. I'm very talkative once I get the chance to chat.

Never been depressed and played games since I was 4 so maybe the oposite is true, Gamers aren't Depressed. And even thosse who are depressed probably use gaming as an escape not a hobby or interest.

this study is full of shit.

+1, good sir.

Odds are the people they called for this survey were older, since I doubt many 12-14 y/o kids will be participating in a survey. So the 35 age limit seems pretty bogus, especially nowadays with pretty much every kid owning some type of gaming device. As for depressed, I would be too if I was a middle aged man who spend more hours in his basement than his bedroom with a non-functioning child sized penis and more body fat that a whale. But I'm not. And while I'm sure there's many gamers who are like this, there's also a lot of kids who aren't depressed, middle aged, and whose penis hasn't died yet. I wouldn't be depressed if I could get any game for free, which many people can do nowadays with even minor experience.
