PS1/2 Free MCBoot - No Idea How to Use

I just got a memory card with Free MCBoot installed for me in the mail today, and tried to get started on getting it working.

My first goal was to figure out how to set up a PSX emulator, so I could play a couple games on a USB stick until I could get the cords and stuff needed to run PS2 games through a network setup. I downloaded PS2PSXe and followed the directions to get it working. When I started the program, it froze on a black screen.

I looked over all the directions to see what I did wrong, and I noticed that all of the file locations started in "mass" instead of "Removable Disk", so I renamed my USB stick (really a microSD card in a USB adapter) to "mass" to see if it helped.

For some reason now, it's freezing on the splash screen for Free McBoot itself. I have no idea what I could have done wrong with it. I didn't mess with any settings, and it worked correctly the first couple times I tried running it.

EDIT: Just figured out that Free McBoot freezes if I turn it on with the USB inserted. When I have the USB taken out, it loads just fine.

EDIT II: Turns out the problem was my adapter. I swapped for a normal USB drive, and it will start the games, but then I have issues.

MegaMan Legends: Plays the Capcom splash screen, then spazzes out with random junk all over the screen.

Tales of Phantasia (English Tranlation Patched): Allows the romanized/translated ability dialog box, but then freezes on black when it tries to play the intro movie.

I gave up with the PS1 emulator. I prefer to do a swap trick to load PS1 backups.

Yeah, I figured out the problem. The three games I picked out to try the emulator out all happened to not be on the compatibility list. Also, my card-to-USB adapter is a piece of crap that stops working randomly, and that added to my problems. I just need to either get a better adapter or get a cord to see if connecting directly to my computer will work the same way connecting to a router will. If I can get it to work just by connecting to the laptop, it should be pretty easy to get going.

If you're going to use USB, use a proper USB stick, not some shoddy adapter which the PS2 may or may not interface with. Changing the drive label will not change how the system interfaces with the drive, labels are only there for user convenience.

As for loading games, USB is the worst possible option you could use - the PS2 has USB 1.1 and it's far from the fastest possible interface. Either go for HDD loading, SMB loading or burnt backups, USB is a last resort option, it's very bugged and I only use it with one game that refuses to load over SMB.

If you have a fat PS2, your better off getting a hard drive and the network adapter, if its a slim your best option is to use SMB loading with Open PS2 Loader
