The Nintendo 3DS/Wii U eShop had different music throughout its lifespan, and the tracks are available to listen on variety of sites. However, the original, unconverted files aren't preserved anywhere. The music is downloaded from N's SpotPass servers to the 3DS, and can't be extracted from the eShop app.

The original music files can be extracted from a (modded) 3DS using the following method:
  • On the 3DS, launch FBI -> Ext Save Data -> Nintendo eShop -> Browse User Save Data
  • Press A on boss_bgm1 -> Copy, then go to SD card -> press A on current directory -> Paste, and repeat for boss_bgm2, boss_xml1 and boss_xml2
  • You should now have 4 files: boss_bgm1, boss_bgm2, boss_xml1 and boss_xml2 on your SD card
If anyone can extract the boss files from their consoles I would appreciate if you could send them to me.

Current status:
  • 2013-09
  • 2013-12 [obtained]
  • 2014-01 [obtained]
  • 2014-04
  • 2014-07 [obtained]
  • 2015-01 [obtained]
  • 2015-06 [obtained]
  • 2015-09 [obtained]
  • 2015-12 [obtained]
  • 2016-01 [obtained]
  • 2016-05 [obtained]
  • 2019-05 [obtained]
Also, it is possible for different 3DS's to have different boss_bgm files depending on when they last opened eShop. If there is no User Save Data in FBI, then that means eShop was not opened before (or no NNID associated).

How can we determine what year the 3DS firmware is? For example, what year is 11.0 firmware? And do different regions have different eShop music?

From my observations, the music is based on when the eShop app was last opened, not the firmware version. US/EU/JP should have the same music at the same point in time.

Sorry for bumping, but is there a link to what's been preserved so far? I'd love to have the original untouched boss_bgm files.

I was going to ask a similar question. Are there any updates on this? I’m also currently trying to archive the eShop’s BGM. I currently have my archive hosted on Archive.org (can’t post the link due to being a new user). It doesn’t seems like you have it in your original list, but I have the Kirby’s 25th Anniversary BGM from August 2017 (Thank You Essem)

I'm still looking for the 2013-09 and 2014-04 music, could you PM me the link to your BGM archive?

Forgive me if I sound stupid, but wouldn't it make the most sense to get a sealed old (aqua blue) 3ds? Or did that 3ds have to connect to the eshop all the way back in 2013? Same with the 3ds xl but for 2014.

It would've needed to have connected to the eShop during that time and then never again
