Hacking downgrade then upgrade with game cart

Apologies if this was addressed but I downgraded with gateway my new (old) 3ds xl to 4.2 and I was wondering if I can just pop in my Luigi's mansion cartridge to upgrade to 4.5? Will this mess everything up? I know there is no benefit to 4.5 but I just want to know.

I downgraded but then I updated to 8.1 with super smash bros (wanted to use my cart saves) and it works fine.

Downgraded my 3ds xl enough times and used animal crossing for 4.5 or majoras mask for 7.1

Upgrading to 4.5 doesn't really do anything except...allow you to play 4.5 retail carts on sysnand

Since karl managed to port mset to the n3ds its only a matter of time before 4.5 becomes pointless.

I don't follow the Karl thread since unfortunately I won't understand what's going on. Wouldn't we still need some kind of exploit? I like the ds exploit since you don't need online or any game carts. Will there be a better way?
