i wouldn't say that, both my current laptop and pc are both hp compaq and i've had them since 2010, still work fine?

at least HP are not like alienware and charge you over the odds for outdated gpu and stuff.

the indian call centers are the worse, they drive me nuts when i have to call them, i try to avoid them as much as possible as you end up repeating your problem 4+ times.

I already have a cyperpower pc desktop that is a monster a processing things. I bought it wo years ago but the window experince point is still at 7.9. I just never bought a good laptop before...

ok, last resort as you have the microsoft gift card so you can only buy from their website, have a look at these specs, they both don't have SSD HD (the samsung does but only 8gb but it has a 1TB HD to compensate) both of them are $1,500 (minus the $500 from your gift card) the samsung does not have a blu ray drive, not sure how much of a priory a blu ray drive is needed?

i really like the Dual-screen Taichi, you have the best of both worlds, a tablet and a netbook in one, main disavantages it has no blu ray/ dvd drive.

i like this laptop:

but it's really expensive, almost 2 grand :S, plus again, it has no optical drive, i don't think it's worth that much.

the ASUS Zenbook Prime is ok, but you are going to struggle with the 4GB of ram, it also doesn't come with professional, only home premium.

OS doesn't really matter to me. Linux all the way. Also I have a window 7 professional disk of my own. Microsoft has one f the series 9 in stock and I wouldn't mind buying it, but it doesn't contain a discreet graphic card and isn't 1080. Thanks o the help. It was immensely helpful. Still going around the mall to fiddle with some laptops...

For that price you might as well go with the MBP w/retina. Better screen, GPU, and way better support. Sony makes decent laptops but I've found their support to be non-existant.

Could you tell me why? Let me calculate this for you.

Base Price * Tax

Mac Book Pro w/ Retina (Lowest End)
$1999 * 1.0775 = $2153.92 (Student Price)
$2199 * 1.0775 = $2369.42 (Normal Price)

Sony Vaio Z Series Mid 2011 (Highest End)
$1499 * 1.0775 = $1615.17
Microsoft Store Giftcard ($500) = $1615.17 - $500 = $1115.17

The difference between the two price is around $500. BTW, the graphics in the external GPU is much better than the Mac Book Pro. I don't really need any support; I actually never needed any beside broken parts. The spec along with the price is amazing compare to the Mac Book. I agree, the Mac Book Pro does look great, but the spec doesn't for it's price. I would love to buy a Mac Book Pro if the spec matches the spec or even better and the prices rises reasonably. Can anyone point to me if any of such said exists? I also have a $500 gift card for Microsoft Store from a friend so any product from them would drop down tremendously. Thank you for everyone feedback.

A couple of things:

1-I was not aware you were buying the older version of the Sony, the new versions start at about $1500 and higher end specs cost well over $2000 (I believe this is a 15% CPU improvement).

2-The Sony does not have a better GPU. MBP w/retina has both a HD 4000 and a GT 650M (even on the cheapest version). The 650M is currently a class 1 GPU according to notebookcheck while the AMD 6650M is a class 3 GPU.

3-The MPB screen is pretty insane, any reputable 27inch screen with a similar resolution will run you at least $700, this is a top of the line IPS screen with incredible resolution (Sony and 99% of all other laptops use the cheaper TN screen). However this is up to you if you want to pay for this.

4-At your price point, with the $500 giftcard, the Sony is a good choice, but I do believe the MPB w/retina actually justifies the higher price (unlike many other things Apple sells).

I promised myself never to buy from Apple again, but you are right; a MBP is really nice and probably the ownly thing that is worth it at Apple. I am deciding weather to buy a lower end or the $2200 model. I don't want my two grand computer to go the toilet just after one year...

Edit: I read some review that the Retina is not worth it since gaming on it reach 30 FPS at its peak. Scaling helps, but why buy a retina display?
