Hardware Does Netflix Streaming Require Driver Board?

I have a friend whose Driver Board recently went out on his bluray drive on his PS3. He just tried to watch something on Netflix, but he's running into problems. Now he's convinced that streaming Netflix requires a working Driver Board and that's the root of his problem. Can anyone verify this one way or the other?
