The lack of manual lock didn't make the game a hulking pile of shit like so many people would try to have you believe though. 99% of what you're fighting doesn't need to be fought in any discernible order anyways, so 9 times out of 10, you'll be just fine even without the manual target lock. They only mention it explicitly because people bitched about it. Yeah, it's nice, but at the same time, it isn't as if no manual target lock is game breaking. Really, all they did was address things that people complained about, period, the largest of which seems to be focused on the appearance of the characters, and most of it being stuff that generally won't make a game significantly better or worse.

Even without the manual target lock, DmC had a lot of promise and was a fun game to play, and I hope that by essentially bending to whiny fans and their bitching, that DmC sells reasonably well on PS4 and X1.

If a series that's known for difficulty, precision, and mastering has a game that doesn't need any sort of coherence on who to fight first, isn't that a telltale sign of a bad game?

I mean it's really hard to put Donte aside, and from what I played of the demo, it was a half-baked action game underneath it all. Plus it's hard to get over all the other stuff when it's just covered in a pile of shit. Awful soundtrack, awful script, awful voiceovers, awful art. Games aren't "just gameplay" after all.

It's hard to argue that, gameplay wise, it's nearly as good as DMC3, or even 1 or 4.

This is the problem. "A series known for". Reboots don't often reflect the source material all that strongly, so maybe I'm one of few, but I didn't go into the game expecting it to be like any other Devil May Cry game. Hell, that's why they refer to it as DmC with "Devil May Cry" being the subheading. They're divorcing the game from the rest of the series because it is not part of that series. It is a different game that shares essentially just the most basic concept of what Dante is.

Overall, the game is fun. People who have actually played it start to finish generally have positive things to say about it, and critic reviews are generally positive. I'm not arguing that it's a perfect game with no room for improvement, but it certainly deserves more than being instantly shit on because it isn't the series it is trying not to be.

But when the series' strongest and most well known aspect is combat, and you completely butcher it, doesn't that just make it a shitty reboot?

You're basically saying we should abandon expectations to accept a game that is thoroughly mediocre to other games, not only in its series, but in its genre.

If you don't want the baggage that comes with it, don't use the name. That goes for all reboots, not just this.

Don't try to piggy back sales off the name, and then complain when people don't buy it, because it's bad compared to the older games in the series.

I remember my husband, a devil may cry fanboy, rented this to see how bad it was... and then loved it. I still need to play it myself. Looks like this may end up being a gift to the both of us.

The combat isn't shitty though. It's simply not the same combat engine, and it isn't yet polished. The up port seems to be addressing many of the issues with the battle system as it was presented in DmC though, so even if you didn't like it much, perhaps the up port will fix what irked you. Besides that, the original DmC was still plenty of fun. It is a genuinely good game. Not amazing, not bad, but a good game worth playing through. Even then, those hung up on the Devil May Cry combat engine from the original series are primarily strapping on nostalgia glasses. It wouldn't take much polish on the new combat system to outshine the old in just about every way.

I'm actually interested now that it looks like you can use older design Dante skin over the emo punk. Should have done that from the beginning though.
Nice time to do this as the PS4 is starving for good action games like this.
4 is some nice icing on the cake too for $40.

I'm sold. F*** it. :-)

Not really emo, though i get what you're coming from had same feeling first time i've seen a new design, rather old dante looks like gay metro to me now.

No their not. If it was just nostalgia, going back to the original games, the combat system would not hold up. Not only does it hold up, it's better than DmC's.

You can make that argument for Resident evil, people who played the old games might like the tank controls, but they are clunky and in a no way better than the modern controls. The same can not be said of DMC. The combat system still holds up today. It's not nostalgia, it's a better system.

The DMC HD collection didn't bomb sales wise like this did, I wonder why, if it's just nostalgia.

The excuses people come out with for DmC not selling are a joke.

I have no idea why people seem to think the game has some sort of right to sell, it doesn't, no game does.

It's not:

Fanboys
Nostalgia
omg they changed his hair
or as one idiot in the media put it, "fans killing the game out of spite".

Capcom put out a game, that, judging from sales, a lot less people wanted it than they thought. They watered down Devil May Cry to appeal to a wider audience, an audience that is clearly not there/not interested.

The whole media circus around this game is a joke. Making out the consumers are horrible because they didn't buy a product that didn't appeal to them, even throwing ridiculous stuff out like "changed hair", while ignoring the actual issues.

Even if it was just changed hair (which it's not), so what? People are always being told to "vote with their wallets", well this time they did, the message was clear, no reboot. It doesn't make them fanboys or wearing nostalgia goggles, because they don't buy something that doesn't appeal.

Umm.. you're saying there is a residen evil game with good controls ? Which one ? I clearly missed it.

Didn't say it they have good controls, just the new controls>tank controls. That doesn't mean the new ones are good, just better than the old. Precision aiming alone makes them better.

They're still traumatic experience...
Then again i dunno if i went through anything worse than gods eater on psp.. claw controls... but game was good so i ended up straining joints in my finger

Ok it's out today and I'm really interested in this game because I've never played it. Is it a good buy for $40 or can I expect it to drop a lil bit? Do digital games even drop on PS store? Lol I think I might just skip every game until the remastered editions comes out.

Never claw, that is a committing a sacrilege to gaming.

Ratchet's tutorial in PS All Stars makes you press X while holding Triangle. I used finger + thumb there, but only to verify that this was actually a move. (and to verify whether it was required of me) so basically I confirmed the horrible truth.

I have actually played and beaten both DMC and devil may cry 4. IMHO the game play of the reboot DMC title was further better then devil may cry 4. My only complaint with DmC?, it was too dam short.

That's why i'm not playing monster hunter games ;) I could endue it for god eater but that's about it. Now i'd prolly just get a ps vita or play on emulator to avoid this crap.
