Hello,

I have a modded PS2 model SCPH-77004 (EU) with a Matrix inifinity v1.9x modchip.

Story so far:
Recently I wanted to play some games with it and I noticed that DVD+-R discs aren't working anymore. DVDs and CDs did work fine. So the laser was giving up.
I took it apart cleaned the laser with isoprop and tested a few dvds/cds and placement of console while it was opened.
In that process I plugged the cables in and out a few times. At the end I had a fried laser (messed around with the potentiometers) and a damaged ribbon cable from the spindle motor.

So I ordered a replacement for the spindle and laser.
After desoldering the safety point and checked it with a multimeter I put everything back together.

The discs won't spin - neither CDs nor DVDs.

Detailed explanation of the disc reading process:

When I push both handles to trigger the disc reading process the laser unit moves to the inside of the disc, goes a bit off and enables the CD laser for a short moment and then switches to the DVD laser for ~1 sec. After that the laser unit stays in position and doesn't move. The disc is not spinning. The laser unit behaves exactly the same as if no disc is inserted.

Other thoughts:
I read that the IC unit could be damaged when the ribbon cable is connected/disconnected while the console is on but it seem only to affect PS2 fat units (? The forum where I read that was describing a specific chip which is missing on slim versions).
I checked all fuses I could find and they seem to be working. (tested with a multimeter and used the 200Ohm noise resistor. It did beep on every fuse)

Help please:
So basicly I have no clue anymore what is damaged.
- the laser - If somebody could give a short video/detailed explanation what the laser does before/after the discs spin up. This could help me to find out if the new laser unit is broken/not able to detect discs.
- the spindle motor - If somebody knows the pinouts and voltage for the spindle motor I could manually power it and see if it is working.
- Something else that can be broken I don't know of?

Thank you for reading!

Hello.:)

Maybe you´ve ordered/got the wrong Laser type.

You need this one:

PVR−802W
https://www.amazon.com/PVR-802W-Console-Repair-Replacement-PlayStation-2/dp/B074Z5F77Q

You are most likely right!
I bought a KHM-430A. What is the difference? They look exactly the same :/
I had difficulties to find the exact model of the laser since it is not mentioned on the laser unit itself so I decided to buy the model above. The product information mentioned compatibility with 7xxxx models. That means 77004 is not part of it :/ What a weird thing to put it that way.

Thank you anyway! I'll buy the new laser right away so I can fix it in a few weeks.

Thank you.:)

Differences:

PS2 series 700xx - 750xx uses both types.
PS2 series 770xx ONLY the PVR-802W.

So today I received in the mail a new PVR-802W lense. I desoldered the safety point and guess what... It has the same symptoms like the other lense.
Disc won't spin and the lense behaves like no disc is inserted.

The lense goes to the initial position, enables the laser and disables again. Disc does not spin.

What else can I do? What kind of black magic is that?

Hello.:)

Sad to hear that,i am sorry for you.:(

One you can check please :

The PS2 has two door sensors. Nothing will spin if it thinks the door is open. The first and least likely to fail is a little black nub right above the power switch. It must be pushed down. The second is way at the back, to the back left of the laser assembly, and is a white or brown plastic box with a tiny plastic nub sticking up. It needs to be down as well.

Easiest way to test is to remove the lid altogether, and manually press down both sensors, because you can access them both easily. Have a disc in, turn it on, and press down both sensors. If it works, disable one or both of the sensors, and you should be playing in no time.

Maybe also the LASER of CD/DVD has to calibrate first. Some customers reported that (Amazon)
I hope yours looks like that:

Sorry,i don´t have any Idea how much you have to adjust. My tip: slowly,in tiny, little steps and carefully and after each move, try it.Maybe you can look in the Internet/Youtube if someone has experiences with this Lasers.

Good Luck my friend.:)

Thanks for the response! I dont mess with the pontentiometers. The one I ordered are factory adjusted. Also the switches are working properly. Else the laser unit would not move when the switches are pressed.

But I've most likely found the issue! First I thought it is just a fold on the ribbon cable but it is a crack! I need to replace that. Pin 7 is broken and I bet it sends the data along those lines to tell that a disc is inserted.

Man another 3 weeks waiting xP

I am glad you found the reason, that makes the wait a little bearable.:)

I took the pill and paid 7$ for the replacement ribbon cable to get it sooner (compared to the 1.5$ for shipping from china).

It works now! Case closed :D

Thanks again for the hint with the wrong laser.

Endlich kann ich mal wieder FFVI auf der Playsi zocken^^ Grüße aus DE ;)
