The psp has custom firmware i know the 2 consoles are nothing alike but the psp has yet to be hacked to the full potential, the wii i think has nearly reached this mark and i just wondered is it possible to have a custom firmware not just a theme but a whole new interface is it possible or am i just hoping to much of the hackers that have done what they have done

I think because it hasn't been necessary, Everything has been able to be done with the apps and interfaces that already exist.

i was just thinking it might be better if we could merge homebrew in with the firmware

I don't see a need for a custom firmware, we can already do pretty much anything we want.
Plus the psp uses CFW for iso loading but we already have backup loaders anyway.

I think it would be awesome to come out with a whole interface that came with all the stuff necessary and more pleasing to the eye. Especially something where a person wouldn't have to worry about the kids clicking on things (we hear about that alot). Don't know why this hasn't happened yet.

The main reason it hasn't happened is because the Wii's firmware setup is so disjointed that there's no pressing need to replace the system menu with something else.

cIOS is already a form of custom firmware, but instead of replacing things it exists alongside the normal firmware. Then cIOScorp takes that one step further by replacing a majority of the IOS's with customized ones. There were a few System Menu replacement projects in the work, but they kind of fell by the wayside. Perhaps the Freedom page is still on Wiibrew if you wanna mess with it.

I figure SNEEK is more ideal as a custom environment than a new system menu anyway. Once it's installed, it doesn't have to be re updated each time a new menu comes out, it doesn't depend on a particular IOS to do it's job, and so forth.

Would it be possible to edit the wii menu and increase the number of channels allowed?

SNEEK redirects all NAND access to a virtual filesystem on your SD card and runs the whole Wii from there. There's a big ol' thread about it that you can read for more information.

As Fenrir said cIOS is basically a Custom Firmware the Wii System just works different as a PSP

i think that would be useless. the wii memory itself can barely support the original number of channels.

Hence SNEEK. =P But still, editing the menu to support more channels would likely be a daunting task. A number of people have been using SNEEK combined with TriiForce to run a bunch of titles from the virtual NAND. The menu can show 47 channels or so, then the rest are selectable in TriiForce.

Preeeetty sure that it's either Nintendo or BroadOn who writes IOS. You don't let third parties write the firmware for your own console.

still, the system menu is not the wii firmware, it's nothing more than a user interface to access stuff installed in your Wii.
It's kicked out of memory as soon as you launch a channel or a gamedisc, a firmware is usually resident which make IOS more similar to what you can call a "firmware"

Ever heard of Freedom? So, it's possible...though very hard (I think Crediar even gave up on this).

And, honestly...who needs a custom "Firmware"? I mean, the only thing I'm doing with my Wii is launching games from USB, and very rarly some WiiWare-Games. And we already have some nice interfaces there (GX, for example...buggy as hell, but somehow a replacement). What do you want to do more? You can't create something beautiful out of a piece of sh*t (honestly...the Layout and Hardware of the Wii is horrible). It worked on the XBox with XBMC, because it was a good console, but I hightly doubt that something like that will work on the Wii.

i guess you can call what we have now a custom firmware but because of a lack of unity in the wii homebrew scene everyone must learn the underlyings of the wii. in contrast to the psp the psp when flashed with a custom firmware has the ability to run homebrew (homebrew channel) and play games from the same menu you play regular games (cioscorp). sure if this info was kept hidden until it was all brought out at once like the psp we would have one group saying there is a custom firmware and one program that would install everything at once it could be done but because of the hatred and jealusy in the scene we don't have a custom firmware and we are better for it because all a custom firmware does is keep people stupid. like in my case i know very little about the psp and how it works under the hood but i know much much more about the wii but i spent the same effort and time learning how to hack both. and its likely that you'll only find a few people how know how the psp works under the hood in contrast to the wii where there are almost 100 people who could tell you the wii's boot process its just better this way thats why the wii still has a large homebrew following because the info is so much more readily available if people would just read its not like that on the psp. maybe im wrong and please feel free to correct me.

theres a difference between custom firmware and menu replacement which the psp still doesn't have a perfectly stable version of remember irshell and project4 those are shell replacements not custom firmwares we have a custom firmware we just don't have a "god like" creature such as dark-alex or team gen telling us its a custom firmware
