I was wondering if there ever will be a custom firmware for the wii because I am too scared to install a modchip.
So do you think there ever will be one?

At the current moment, it's not possible to say it.

We have still to see Nintendo's reaction to the flood of VC Games, and the update which enables IOS37 (the firmware thingy that blocks Trucha signed things) still has to come out.

Also Wii homebrew support is still being developed, so we don't know for sure what's REALLY possible to do and what's not.

Modchips are pretty safe, no need to be scared

If you're not too soldering savvy, just find a professional to install it for you

we can already read/write the Wii's file system, so when it's developed, i think there is a very good chance of a custom firmware, but it's gonna take a while

You'd still need a modchip to install it though =D..unless we can somehow use the twilight hack again.

Currently all we need though, is a hex-edit of the firmware WAD that disables the check for burned discs.
(Correct me if this won't work)

Nah. The drivecheck is hardware not software.

The Wii scene seems to be moving at a fast rate. I hope that custom firmware ain't to far off this will open up even greater possibilities. I love my custom firmware on my psp it just makes more things possible and easier by far. well I will keep my fingers crossed that it ain't to far off.

Well we have EVERYTHING we need to open, edit and repack the firmware files.
