Nintendo's Virtual Console release schedule for April includes just three games -- quite a contrast from the service's high points in 2007 and 2008, when the monthly additions would routinely top a dozen. However, even with just three releases, Nintendo of Japan manages to make us totally jealous, because one of those releases is Chrono Trigger.

Nintendo (or Square Enix) has decided to charge a premium 900 Wii Points for the Super Nintendo RPG, a 100-point markup that is usually reserved for games "imported" from other regions, but used here basically because they can. That's still cheaper than the current (discounted) price for the DS version in the US.

In case we hadn't achieved sufficient jealousy levels, the other planned SNES release for next month is Mega Man X, which will sell for the standard 800-point price in Japan. Also on the schedule: King of the Monsters 2 for Neo Geo.

They'd better bring them overseas, it would really help the VC.

Uh, isn't Chrono Trigger on the DS superior in terms of content? And it's cheap too, AND it's portable.

Not really anything to be jealous of.

This. Plus, I already own a PSX version of the game which you can get for about $12 off of Amazon. Not even an impressive deal.

YES YES YES YES YES I don't care about getting it on VC (good to hear it, though) I am happy and waiting for the inevitable price drop the SNES cart will get... When CTDS came out it went down to 20-30 and it jumped back up recently. Time is now to snag a copy, people.

Yeah, but the load times are terrible. I owned FFV & VI for the PSX, and it was pretty much unbearable.
Also the VC version would be cheaper than $12, although I suppose the $12 for the PSX version also nets you FFIV.

The only reason I prefer the DS version is for the retranslation; honestly. I don't think Ninty or SE will be backporting that to the VC version, though. The extra content was pretty poor, and something I could do without.

Chrono Trigger load times actually haven't really changed at all from SNES to PSX to DS. It takes the same amount of time in all of them for new areas to load, and the DS version is even faster with pulling up the menu. Of course, the menu is completely retooled for the DS version too.

I don't know what you're talking about, but the PSX version of CT had horrid load times, and even just pulling up the menu took 1-2 seconds. Although you get used to it after awhile, going straight there after having played the SNES version will make you notice the big difference.

Goes SNES, PSX, SNES, PSX. Unless you didn't mean the battles or something.

The battles aren't terrible really, compared to that of other turn based PSX RPG's at least where all the extra crap made the load time longer than people may have thought. Compared to the SNES though, that is kind of terrible, especially considering they basically just shoved the SNES game on a disc.

Leave it to a Joystiq blogger to drool over a ridiculous premium like that. Blasted corporate apologists.

I would rather have these as downloadables on the 3DS.

    Eh, I'm still pretty glad.
