Yes that's a modchip. The metal is just shielding for the console.

Dude who I bought it from let me swap it with another PS1. Works, but burnt and NTSC games are black and white. Seems like a common and fairly easy-to-fix problem, though.

For the color issue, you need a full RGB scart cable. Don't use a RCA to scart adapter.

Composite is blurry (one cable for 3 colors) and render in black and white with NTSC games. Sometime it can even be flickering in green/pale lines.
The picture is cleaner with RGB cable (1 cable per color). It's like component quality but for 480i.


If you can, look at the pin numbers, If it's a scart with only 10 pins, don't buy it. if it a scart cable with all 21 pins you have a chance that they are all connected and used.
attention, it can have 21 pins but RGB are not wired, and it's still be a crappy composite output.

There's an official cable, I don't remember if it's a good one.

For some weird reason the burnt game the guy gave me to test the console with plays in colour.

My TV's got a SCART port at the back, so I can get one of those. http://www.play-asia.com/rgb-cable-with-audio-and-guncon-output-paOS-13-49-en-70-7f.html this look like a safe buy? I don't know where someone usually goes to find these things, and I don't think Amazon even ships to Australia.

Yes, this cable looks fine. At least the description does, and it has all 21 pins. just hope that the RGB pins are connected, not the composite only.
