Hi all,

I recently bought an used 4.2J and tried hacking it following through modmii's custom guide.
Both BB v2 and str2hax run smoothly, but when the time comes to launch the hackmii installer, the wii freezes in a black screen and the disk drive flashes blue endlessly.

After trying this several times, I decided to see if updating the system to 4.3J and factory resetting it would help.
Ran into a small issue in the first update try, even though I didnt interrupt it or the wifi signal stopped or anything, the update ran into an issue;
anyway, on a second try, the system claimed update was complete and checking for updates returns "system is up to date", so I think the update finished with no issues.

Again, re-ran modmii custom guide, now set to 4.3J and using letterbomb or str2hax, but the same issue remains, the wii freezes in a black screen and the disk drive flashes blue endlessly when the time comes to load the hackmii launcher.

I saw some posts here and reddit saying that the IOSes could be screwed up, so I deleted the boot.elf and using the boot.dol from YAWM from modmii, I installed all IOSes available in the wad folder in the modmii pack the system allowed. some of them, notably the cIOSes, but also some others, I could not install due to 2011 error, but notably most of them installed fine. I later confirmed that the IOSes in the wad folder matched the latest version of the system, so I believe there were no issues in doing so.

still same issue; whats new is sometimes the disk drive won't flash blue when I load hackmii; some times it still does though. doesnt change that I'm stuck in a black screen.

Later I downloaded all non-stub IOSes from NUS downloader; it was mostly the same as the custom pack from modmii, except for IOS 80. I installed it fine, but again no changes.

I ran Wii Mod Lite and checked the IOSes. Most of them are shown as cyan, they are clean and appear to be the latest version; ios 59 and 62 are green (installed) and they are kinda unusual, but I've read they are used by some Japanese games, so I believe this is not the issue. Unfortunately, these IOS are not available in NUS downloader nor in the modmii custom pack, so I could not update them through the wad installer.

Anyway, since none of this appears to be work, I was looking for posting pointing to issues running hackmii and I found a post where Xflat suggests running casper2bootmii and doing a full nand flash (nuclear appraoch as he says), so the system would run as new. I deleted all files in the SD and only kept the casper2bootmii files + letterbomb; casper2bootmii loads fine after the exploit, there's a screen with some text, but on the next second, the system either resets or runs in an error where there is some new text, but it's unfortunately completely unreadable, as the text is all strikethrough, very weird......

I'm running out of options :( I also thought about trying the old method and maybe installing cIOS manually, but I could not get it to work as I don't have trucha bug in any of the IOSes nor any other nand access method...

I also tried to run the cIOS installer from the exploit (it freezes in a black screen) or from Wii Mod Lit, but it runs in an error.

By the way, looking at IOSes versions, it appears cioscorp was never installed, all ios versions are the latest in line with 4.3J, except for ios 59 and 62, versions are slightly weird, but I could not find the latest version.

Do you have any suggestions on what I could do? I am fine with the nuclear approach and, but I can't get casper2boomii to load...
are there any alternatives to using hackmii?

Not sure if this helps, but I bought some games when I bought the wii and I decided to try some of them now to see if they work and if it would help understand the issue

Muramasa: The Demon Blade - game runs fine
TALES OF SYMPHONIA: Dawn of the New World - game runs fine

Xenoblade - disk reads; see the image of the game; click play and the wii freezes in a black screen
super paper mario - same as Xenoblade
Starfox Adventures (GC game) - same as Xenoblade, except there is no image of the game, but the console correctly recognizes it as a GC disk

Forgot to mention, but I did all tests using 2 different micro sd cards and confirmed the lock was not on.

Update: I've noticed that the system is generally capable of loading boot.dol apps, but not boot.elf.
I was able to successfully load cleanrip, mymenuifymod, nintendont, priiloader and priiloader_launcher from YAWN on letterbomb
unfortunately none of the apps are really useable as I dont have nand access, the apps open up and return errors due to restricted nand access.
hackmii and casper2bootmii are both boot.elf and wont load/freeze with errors

Casper needs ios53, presumably u have a clean version of that installed? I think that can be customized with meta.xml arguments but probably not relevant to u in this case

Have u tried launching yawmme then using its app launcher to load Casper or bootmii? Are you able to run a syscheck at all?

Xflak!! thank you so much for the reply
I tried reinstalling ios53 just in case, still I can't open casper, even through yawmme.

I can load systemcheckme through yawmme, but I'm having a weird issue were my system freezes at ios9 even though I double checked the argument to ignore ios9.......

from meta.xml file in syscheckme folder:

</long_description>
<arguments>
<arg>--debug=false</arg>
<arg>--forceNoAHBPROT=false</arg>
<arg>--skipIOS=9</arg>
</arguments>
<no_ios_reload/>
</app>

I'm gonna post a general look into the IOSes from wii mod lite, at least according to that the system looks clean in general.
I'm also gonna see if I can get syscheckme to run, even if I need to check each ios individually...

you're launching syscheck via an exploit right? If so, it wont pick up on any meta.xml arguments, so not surprising that it's disregarding the skip ios 9 argument for example.

This is definitely a weird case. Can you confirm nothing funny is going on with hardware? All unnecessary peripherals are disconnected and no other obvious issues (like disk drive or bluetooth problems)?

Thank you so much for the help! forgot to mention, but, modmii is pretty amazing, you are really making this community.

see images of IOSes overview from Wii Mod Lite and Dop Mii. For Dop Mii, if I press A to continue the check, the system freezes.

Sorry the images look dark , I made my room dark to hide the mess from the TV reflection :shy:

Anyway, to answer your post:
1) sorry, I didnt know that it wouldnt pick up meta.xml arguments if launching from exploit/wad manager. I will check all IOSes individually. Seems doable, but will need to save each of the reports in the PC before I continue, as syscheckme always uses the same file name, so it gets overwritten if I do 2 consecutive IOSes.
2) no obvious hardware issues/concerns. I remember GC games not running since the day I bought it, but I'm not sure if other wii games had any issues at the time..... bluetooth, in terms of the controller at least, works pretty flawlessly. disk drive too seems to run fine. 2 games run no issues, other 2 games show up in the disk screen; gc game gets recognized as a GC disk, just doesnt run. no GC hardware connected, I double checked. Only power, video and remote sensor (this one is needed so I can access letterbomb, right?) connected.

I wonder if the issues stems from some internal hardware issue I wouldn't be able to tell without opening it up.... at the same time though, I was able to update the firmware and am able to run some games, so it doesn't make a lot of sense..... on the other hand, when I bought it it was packed in a box and it looked pretty neat on the outside, but when I got home and opened it up, it was super dirty all over the place, console, remote, mostly everything. cant imagine the cause, but led me to think if there is no hidden/small hardware issue, for example maybe one of the GC connectors is behaving as if something is always connected, when it isnt....

Meta arguments would get picked up if launched via the hbc or yawmme, but ahb access would only be passed on if it had it to begin with, which in your case it doesn't

Maybe in the future yawmme will get an update with an ios exploit to gain ahb access without the hbc and thus have more capabilities when launched via an exploit like this

I appreciate the kind words, and I wish I had more ideas to suggest. Good luck!
...
Hmmm, just had another idea. Have u tried v1.0 of the hackmii installer? It's available on the bootmii website

Thank you for the continued support and replies!

As I mentioned before, I'm running syscheckme on all ioses individually since the meta arguments are not being passed (by the way, I'm running through Yawmme).
I havent tried v1.0 of hackmii installer yet, will try it once I finished the syschecks.

I will compile everything in a single file/post, but notably so far, the below ios when getting syschecked all freeze the system. do you think this means anything?
ios9
ios12
ios13
ios14
ios15
ios17
ios21
ios22

Syscheckme on below ios finished fine and quickly looking at the reports nothing appears to be out of order

pasting ios46 report as an example; other reports I was able to get look pretty similar, except for ios and ios version

I tried hackmii v1.0 and also v0.7b just in case, but unfortunately I have the same issue, the system freezes and disk drive flashes blue, either running letterbomb -> hackmii v1.0/0.7b or letterbomb -> yawmme -> hackmii v1.0/0.7b

I finished running syscheckme on all ioses and compiled everything as below.
Nothing too out of ordinary, I believe.. except for the ioses which freeze the system when I try to run the check.
Weird part is I can install them again without any issues..... but it doesnt stop syscheckme from freezing, so I imagine these ioses are broken somehow?

also just a small hardware? related issue I noticed, but I think it's not related to the system problems.. in some occasions, even though I press the d-pad only once, the system interprets it as if I am still pressing the key when I'm not. again, it sounds like a typical controller false positive, but just thought I'd mention it anyway..

Thank you so much for the reply and suggestion! I think I tried this, but it didn't work as I don't have nand access, like trucha bug or anything.. which is also the reason why I was trying to install at least a single cIOS, but couldnt again for the same reason.

Anyway, I will try again and update if any progress, but again thank you so much for the suggestion!

That makes sense. The only other thing I can think of is to try to launch the ios236 installer from the exploit and see if you can install that (may encounter the same issue).

If the "IOS36-64-v3351.wad" (which you can get with ModMii) file is detected in the SD root, the automatic mode starts immediately (without waiting for 10 seconds), otherwise the Installer is started in standard mode.

Another option is Trucha Bug Restorer for 4.3. I have no idea of that would work with your current situation or not.

Hi borissaid!

Thank you so much for the suggestions and new ideas.

Sorry I haven't been able to get to this yet, have been busy with work and some personal stuff, but I'm trying to test all of this between today, latest Monday.

The IOS236 installer and trucha bug restorer are some cool ideas I hadn't tried yet, so hopefully I can get some positive results.

although I did mention trying to install cios, I wasn't really sure I should be doing that, so after a few tries, I had actually given up on the idea

I tried to have a look inside the wii, dont think I did anything super invasive, but now it won't turn on... the power light is red as you'd expect when turned off, but when I press to turn it on, it goes green and suddenly black and it wont turn on :( I double checked it, took it apart and put it back 2-3 times making sure I was doing it correctly, but still the issue remains..

I found some video online saying you should remove the charger completely and plug it in after a few minutes directly to the wall, but still nothing..

I guess the hardware in this wii was kinda faulty after all.. even if the system was apparently working normally, the issues I was having just seem too weird to explain? I dont know.....

just feel disappointed I wont be able to test your theory about the IOS236 and trucha bug, I even had the SD card prepared for it... when I put it in and turned the thing on, it wont turn on.. anyway..

Ill try again a few days later but if nothing guess I just give up and buy a new wii.....
