Im headed out tomorrow to find a wii u is there a specific firmware that I need to have im order to mod if for home brew or is any wii u moddable now?

As long as nintendo doesn't fix the browser exploit, every wii u with firmware 5.5.0 and above can be hacked.

I use a 64GB SDCard so NAND Dumps can be done if needed 32GB Deluxe Black / 16GB SDCard for 8GB White Basic.
Honestly buy biggest you can afford it much easier to install Games and pay attentioon to Speeds on Card this can help determine Speed of Copying and Installing via External HDD.

HDD 2.5 Portable will need Y Splitter x2 USB Feeds because WiiU does not output enough Power via one USB Slot 3.5 are fine because they obviously have there own external Power.
