Hello, I am in the process of trying to jailbreak an N3ds xl. I am troubleshooting at this point. Right now I am getting a Sighaxed FIRM - file not found. The troubleshooting guide tells me to put two files into the boot9strap folder which I have done. However, I am still getting the error. Hoping someone can assist with this and thank you in advance.

hi ! first i have to ask if you are following the guide ? or some video? videos tend to be worse
I am following both, I started with the video and finding out that I need the guide, as the video is not very good as you said. Anyway, I am having a difficult time when it should not be this difficult.

well you might have one of your folders misnamed if it really has the files, how about you attach a screenshot of how your sd card folders look?

Please post a screenshot of your SD contents.
If everything is correct, it might be a problem with the SD.

heres a screen shot:
The boot9strap folder is not in root directory but under SD:/Nintendo 3DS
Same for all the other stuff.

Move everything out of this folder (keep only the subfolder with the name consisting of 32 random hexadecimal characters - that one must be there).

This may be a dumb question but do I need a second 3ds xl to do this ?

What do you want a second DS for?!
Just use your computer to move everything inside "SD:/Nintendo 3DS/" to "SD:/" (keep only the random name folder inside SD:/Nintendo 3DS)

As @KleinesSinchen said, you need to put the bootstrap, cias, gm9 & luma folders on the root of the sdcard, the root being "sd:/". The same for boot.firm, boot.3dsx, fbi.3dsx & homebrew launcher.cia. Hope that makes sense!
