Hello!

Sorry for the upcoming wall of text but I'm including as many details as I can! Hopefully this is the correct board as well.

A couple weeks ago, when I tried to load WiiMC, MPlayer CE, or Snes9x GX off my SD card from the Homebrew Channel, I'd get a black screen and my remote would shut off. For about two months, they had been working fine. They loaded files through my local network. I performed no updates to anything.

The way I first installed the Homebrew Channel over about two months ago was through Letterbomb. I followed the Letterbomb guide in the CompleteSoftmodGuide. At this time, I did not install BootMii as the guide for 4.3 seems to not have mentioned it. Apps ran off my SD card just fine and all was good.

When the apps began to cause problems, I uninstalled the Homebrew Channel, reformatted my SD card, and tried using LetterBomb again. It installed correctly and the apps would still black screen and shut off my remote after loading 100%. After a lot of searching, I found a "Softmod ANY Wii" guide that was written by mauifrog. Looking around today, it looks like it was posted here at gbatemp at one point but has very recently been edited.

I started with a 4.3U old white Wii and followed that guide (again, using LetterBomb, for Homebrew and Bootmii installation). When I finished, I had system menu 4.1U and the same apps that were included in the final app pack. This was done on December 7 2011.

Without touching anything else, I tried to load the same apps that caused me problems before (WiiMC, MPlayer CE, Snes9x GX) and they still black screened.

Quick testing has the Disc Channel (with New Super Mario Wii), Mii Channel, Weather Channel, News Channel, Internet Channel, and Homebrew Channel all loading and working correctly. Other official channels were untested.

Working homebrew apps include FCE Ultra GX and VBA GX.

I started with 4.3U and now have:
4.1U
Homebrew Channel 1.08
IOS58 v24.32
I'm currently looking at the Modify ANY Wii 4.3 & below and ModMii for Windows guides.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated! I'm very new at this and am open to any suggestions. And sorry for such a long post!

Well... the only real suggestion I may have for you is following the softmodding guide yet again and seeing if it changes anything. I see no reason in staying on 4.1 and suggest updating back to 4.3, there's nothing to be gained from downgrading as far as I know.

It'd also be useful if you sent us a syscheck log if that works.

And DO install Bootmii and/or Priiloader in case you screw something up and need to load up a NAND backup, you ALWAYS start any softmodding attempt with that.

@OP: Are those the only apps that have problems, or the only ones you have tried? Do you still have your internet set up?

Well you don't get all the anti-homebrew crap and korean bricks that go along with 4.2+, but don't suggest he update "just because". That won't help anything and could cause further issues (although that's unlikely).

Agree, he should follow the guide in my signature.

That's part of mauifrog's guide.

Here are the Homebrew apps I tried after trying to follow that particular guide again on Dec 9 2011.

Homebrew Browser:
Loaded. Downloaded a zip file but had an error after extracting.

WiiMC:
Black screen. Wii remote shut off.

MPlayer CE:
Black screen. Wii remote shut off.

FCE Ultra GX:
Worked.

Snes9x GX:
Loaded. Froze immediately. Wii remote shut off.
Tried twice.

VBA GX:
Worked.

All of these were loaded off of a SanDisk 2GB SD.

If you mean the Wii has a connection to the internet (WiiConnect24), yes I do.

I'll get a new one tonight.

Why would you want to have WiiConnect24 turned on 24/7? From what I understood, you could get online updates installed if you have that option turned on, why not connect to the network only when the App demands it? Sure, you won't be able to use Nintendo Channel, but I personally never saw the point.

I could understand if you had 4.3 (latest) but you don't, so... yeah.

Your Wii can't just update on it's own. With the exception of using a disc in recovery mode, you will always be prompted to accept an update. Besides, he has an elevated version number (mauifrog's guide) so if he ever updates it won't touch the System Menu.

As for WC24, I have it enabled as well and love it. I like getting updates from the channel banners.

Your softmod is perfect. I'm thinking your SD card is going bad. Do you have another one you can try?

I've been considering that as well.

The only other cards I have easy access to are a SanDisk Ultra 4GB SDHD and SanDisk 2GB MicroSD. Would either of these be compatible?

Thanks for all the help so far!

There is no reason not to try them.

Well I'll be... it seems to be working! The apps have loaded at least but I haven't put any time into them yet. If this really was the problem, I'm glad it was such a simple solution. I'll give it a couple days of use to be entirely sure though.

Thanks for the help!

but the micro SD (with SD adapter)
I like the visual of somebody trying to put the micro SD in their Wii without the adapter. You know it'd be attempted without saying that.
