Hacking Avoiding 3DS firmware updates

Is it possible to stop the 3DS from detecting or notifying me about a firmware update? I'm running 3.0.0-6 at the moment and am happy to stay on that (I don't need folders or MK7 online fix), but every day my 3DS tells me about an update.

I know that if I set Parental Controls I can stop other people accidentally installing the update, but it would still be nice to stop the daily notification. I cannot find a setting in the 3DS itself to stop notification, but I wondered if there was anything I could do on my router, e.g. set a fake DNS entry for whatever site the 3DS is querying to check for updates. Ideally I'd still like to be able to receive things on Nintendo Video, Letter Box etc.

Why don't I want to update? I'm hopeful that homebrew may be available one day, and it might be that it requires an older firmware version.

If Homebrew will be available, the latest versions will always be fine (remember how Wii Menu 3.2 was Hacked, being the latest Firmware?).
To disable Automatic Updates, simply turn off Wireless, by pulling up the switch at the right of the 3DS.
Make sure the yellow LED isn't there at all.

Thanks for replies so far. I have tried turning off System Settings, Internet Settings, SpotPass, Automatic Software Downloads, but still it notifies me each morning about the update. This might be because it's already downloaded the update - I don't know.

I realise I could turn off Wi-Fi completely, but then I wouldn't be able to get Nintendo Video or Letter Box stuff.

Ideally I was hoping there was a particular website or URL that I could tell a router or a proxy server to block which would stop it downloading firmware updates (although it might be too late if my 3DS has already downloaded it and is waiting to apply it) without affecting other Internet-y things.

homebrew will work on the latest update if it ever happens

you can take out your sd card before you boot and see if you still get the message

you will know then if its stored on the SD or not

I don't think that will be a problem, but I know how you feel after PSP especially, but even later versions got hacked eventually.

It's just as likely that an exploit will be found in a feature added in a new update. If that happens and they patch it quickly, you'll be stuck because you can either stay on the firmware which doesn't have the exploitable feature or update and get the patched version with the exploit closed.

I personally would not allow any updates with any flash cart until I know it is safe to do so. I remember reading back in the PSP days people getting overzealous and updating their FW just to be able to play a small percentage of the newest games only to make homebrew unuseable. Best suggestion is to keep checking back here or maxconsole to see if any updates render fladh carts useless....

It's just as likely that an exploit will be found in a feature added in a new update. If that happens and they patch it quickly, you'll be stuck because you can either stay on the firmware which doesn't have the exploitable feature or update and get the patched version with the exploit closed.

Nintendo won't release known exploits in a firmware, what will get out is what is known as a zero day exploit. These are not known to developers right away and the people who generally find them keep them secret until the time is right so their chance of being patched is relativley small. Your best bet is to just update the firmware in this case.

Exploits are mistakes, so they won't be (re)-programmed into Firmwares.
