AssemblerGames.com to close on 2019-6-28

The ASSEMblerGames website was started 23 years ago as the personal homepage of the site founder Kevin and later evolved into a mostly-public forum nominally focused on video game collecting and preservation. It also became a reputable marketplace for said items, as well as attracting quality technical discussions. Its end appears to be nearer than ever, with an official statement posted by the new administrator on the 29th of May 2019 announcing the financial unsustainability of having it hosted:

Current account status -$2880 ($120 x 24 months)

It cannot continue at such a loss.

Thank you for being companions for 23 years journey.

Despite being posted out of the blue, this announcement was not excessively surprising for the established userbase - between Kevin's psychological condition forcing him off-site, nominally stepping down in late 2017 in favor of a new mysterious administrator (who since then only applied security updates and paid the bills), the community questioning whether or not the new webmaster is in fact still Kevin undercover, increasing dissatisfaction of users and staff alike with the lack of active administration, and moderators mass retiring in March 2018 in an unsuccessful attempt to highlight the issues - and neither it was for anyone who registered since the latter incident, with no active staff members remaining to activate new accounts anymore.

With the writing having been on the wall for more than a year, ASSEMbler user Nemesis decided to mass download the forums and re-upload the served pages on MEGA, resulting in a static mirror updated as of December 2018.
However, while this 27-gigabyte effort may be sufficient to preserve most of the wealth of information published in the decades of operation, it certainly won't be a substitute for the community - although the newly reborn ObscureGamers.com appears to be headed to be the main spiritual successor.
