Gaming Animcal Crossing Local Play Error

Hey!
I've had this issue for a little over a week or so now, everytime i try and open my gate or look for a town to visit im greeted with this error screen that says "A Communication Error has occured" with a little pic of resetti in the corner. . I dont know why this is happening, im only trying to connect locally to a friend who i'd played with one time before. This error pops up when i have no connection to the internet, but when i am connected to the internet the error doesnt appear anymore but im not able to be found by my friend while my gate is open. Is there anything i can do? Has anyone had this before?
Ive just gone and wiped the sd card with a fresh install of everything and am still getting this error.

currently on 10.0.1, game is updated to current version.

I've updated to 10.0.2, still not working. i will note that if i am connected to wifi it allows my gate to be open, but when this had happened my friend was unable to find my town and i was unable to find his. I've just got no clue as to why this is happening, the first time we played together it was perfectly normal.

I have the exact same problem with local play.

The first time my friend found my town and played together normally. Now, neither of us can find each other’s towns.
I don’t know whether maybe it’s something to do with the latest game update or?

I have not had a problem was on my friends island 5 times this week
