Hacking About R4i Gold 3DS updates

I recently (November 11) bought an r4I Gold 3DS from nds-card and it still didn't arrived (I mean, it arrived here in Brazil, but it's still stuck on the mail). I'm wait for it to get in my hands so I can update my 3DS XL (Which is in 4.2.0-9U). The problem here I don't have another DS so I have to use my 3DS to update. And the thing is I bought Layton: Mask Of Miracles and Paper Mario, and I can't play them, until I update.

BUT, I remembered I do have another DS. I have a broken DS Lite. It still works, but the top screen doesn't work at all. So here I am.

Does the update can be done without having to use the top screen? What is displayed on the top screen?
If there's important information, can some one post a screenshot?

The update uses the bottom screen, so you should be fine. The screen will look similar to this:
